Brian's Story
Life
Well, Hi! Thank you for the interest in my whereabouts and whathappeneds! Actually, I didn't realize I'd left this part blank(sorry!)
Let's see. . .I moved from East Lansing to Detroit in '87 after touring the US for 3 years with a band called T.O.C.(I played guitar), and joined Mad Hatter. We released an album; "Shut up and sit down" the following year. I was a little disappointed with it. I left the band to join the "Skanking Voodoo Dolls", a Detroit based reggae-metal fusion project. A magical group, those folks. I was the youngest member and felt honored to share the stage with every one of them. Also about that time, I got engaged to a beautiful, charming, educated, (and, unfortunately, also) bi-polar runway model. That stable relationship(of course) COMPLETELY turned into a colossal trainwreck; really messed up my life for a while. HI-MAINTENANCE WOMEN: FUN TO LOOK AT, BUT KEEP YOUR HANDS AWAY FROM MOVING PARTS(claws, purse, and usually, MOUTH) AT ALL TIMES! (<- safety tip) Ahemm. . .
I promptly moved to California, working in Hollywood guitar and amp shops for a couple of years before buying a rehearsal/ recording studio in Burbank(Audible Systems/Studio D, which became Cadillac Audio). Within a year we became one of the top 5 in LA, eventually building a client list that read like a page out of BILLBOARD. I got to meet and work with many musical legends( and MY heroes, too!), like Iggy Pop, The Ramones, KISS, Motley Crue, Dio, Rob Halford, Korn, Limp Bizzkitt, etc.(I'll quit name dropping now, but that ain't hardly scratchin' the surface) but, alas, my partner's wife got involved with the finances and (refer to the above warning regarding hi-maintenance females!!) well, it is but a memory now. But, using the connections I'd made with the studio (I'm not going to bother filling out the 'celebrities' section on the right; I've pretty much met all of 'em, at least in the musical world, and lived in close quarters with many, which ain't all sparkle and glitter. . ) I hooked up with Crazy Town(as a Guitar Tech, Bass Tech, & Drum monitor engineer onstage) a few months before "Butterfly" came out, I spent a year and a half on a world tour, going to Europe, Australia, Japan, and many other countries, living with the band in million dollar tour buses, four star hotels, etc. That was a pretty good time, no doubt. They all felt like little brothers to me, and I'll always have fond memories. . .
From there, I signed on as Stage Guitar tech.with Zakk Wylde & Black Label Society for a US tour, finishing it off with '01 OZZFEST, which had Zakk Playing with Ozzy AND BLS(2 shows a day. . . exhausting!)
The next year, I went out with Tommy Lee's band as Tommy's guitar Tech(as well as covering the duties of Bass Tech, Stage left Tech, TITTYCAM operator, and some others. . .)on a 4 month US tour that included 2002 Ozzfest as half of it. During that ...Expand for more
time the MTV reality show about Tommy's life was being shot, so I had to get used to acting like there WASN'T a camera in my face 24/7 when, in fact there WAS, which made my job a real pain in the ass to do properly at times. Christ, they even tried to follow us into the shower once! I heard from some friends that I was on the show regularly, but I never got to see any of it-too busy! Tommy is really cool and was a great guy to work with. Completely down-to-earth, funny, just all-around good dude( and yeah, it IS that big, ladies, if ya REALLY JUST gotta know..)
The next year I did a really brief Canadian tour with the London Quireboys(sic.), which was a riot. Greatest bunch o' blokes a fella could hang out with. Then, I did some pyrotechnic work for MATT ZANE and his band SOCIETY ONE. Sound vaguely familiar? Maybe this'll help. Matt ran(owned) a porno film company(Zane Ent.), and used it, with his own series, PORN TO ROCK, to promote the band. Most of you have seen ONE of them, right?
I am out of space in this bio area, so this continues in SCHOOL BIO(clik)
School
(continued life bio, with this quick thought first--[I'm not sure a school bio is a very bright idea. I mean, didn't we all more or less know what our classmates did since we were in school together?] --anyway ->)That eventually turned into 4 years of touring with them, becoming their front-of-house(main)sound engineer(aka the mixing board guy), zig-zagging all over the US. I got to 'man the bridge' of some truly awesome concert sound systems. It is a cool feeling having 240,000 watts of power under two fingers of your hand, and being responsible for how much of a good show it is for every single person in the crowd. To me, there is nothing more satisfying than pulling off a killer live mix, making it sound like a 'big f**king rock show!'
Touring gets really old after a few years(anybody want about 12 zillion leftover frequent flyer miles?), so these days I stay home(Hollywood, CA) and have put together a modest PA system that is installed in a super hip & cutting edge cool art gallery/film location/performance night event club called BEDLAM WAREHOUSE LA. It is owned and run by art magnet and social event genius Jim Fittipaldi, aka the 'King of Downtown'. He is a very good friend and a hell of a great guy. Bedlam is 32,000 sq. ft. of atmosphere, ambiance, movie sets, and art exhibits, all done in Jim's very happening style.
When asked to direct a film for an upcoming film festival, Jim jumped on it like a 'Pittbull on a pork chop', and insisted that I do all of the audio engineering and soundtrack recording for the project.
The resulting short film, "Mickey Cohen" won a couple of awards at the festival, along with much praise from the movie and art communities. We're set to start work on another one in the near future.(God, I love my job!)- I'll keep ya posted. . . Thanks for visiting!
