Brian's Story

As I look back to those school days in Nanaimo, there were many interesting moments from Elementary School to my Grade 13 year 1966/1967. We all have stories to tell that cover a wide range of topics from those early years to junior hight to the many happenings at the NANAIMO DISTRICT SECONDARY SCHOOL and then those days in University - for me that was UBC - between 1968 and 1972. Then the many decades from the Seventies to the here & now which changes every day. One of the suggestion was how do we want former classmates to remember us. Each of us have different experiences with the many others that touched our lives from the school years and beyond. Concerning how others remember me, well there were many experiences - and the best we can hope for is that others will remember us in a positive light. Beyone graduation in 1965: Worked for one year at the Bank of Montreal in Nanaimo and Campbell River, then returned to NDSS 1966/1967 to complete Grade 13. In 1967/68, I took a year to train in Vancouver to engage in amateur boxing tournaments in Vancouver, Tacoma, Portrland and Seattle as a member of the Vancouver Firefighters. Between 1968/1972, I attended the University of British Columbia for a B. Comm then articled to become a Chartered Accountant in Victoria. Over the decades, I have served on various local or provincial boards including a term as a school trustee in Greater Victoria. In 1971, I was a co-founder of the Nanaimo Boxing Club, and in 1974 I began to help with the re-building of the ...Expand for more
sport of boxing in Greater Victoria. I was one of the founding directors of the Victoria Athletic Association in 1976, and served three years as a treasurer and one year as a director and also was one of the boxing coaches. In the eighties, I was a director of the British Columbia Amateur Boxing Association and served as the news editor from September 1983 to January 1986. During this time, I helped revive the Vancouver Island Boxing Championships that were held in Parksville in 1984. Beyond that I served as a member of the boxing committee in preparation of the 1994 Commonwealth Games, and in 1991 served as the boxing chairman. In the past, I have also served as a president of the Royal Oak Lions Club, and a director with the Broadmead Lodge Foundation. In 2010, I was one of a number of interested person that formed the BRITISH COLUMBIA AMATEUR BOXING HALL OF FAME. For the last three years 2009 to 2011, I have sponsored three inductees into the Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame which includes three different sports: boxing, auto racing and soccer. Along the way there have been many not-for-profit organizations that I have been a member and have served as a director. One was a short term organization related to the publication of several copies of the "Seaside Women's Magazine" which was funded in part by a Federal Government grant. In politics, I have also served as an auditor for several candidates in Provincial and Federal elections. including former premier Dave Barrett and Carole James.
