Bruce's Story
After HS graduation I went to Eckerd College, majoring in Psychology. In 1972, I left St. Petersburg and travelled to Nagoya, Japan where I became the first Eckerd College student to teach at Kinjo Gakuin High School (an all-girls school founded by the Presbyterian church). The program I started has lasted for nearly 30 years. I returned to Eckerd, finished college and then went back to Japan in 1974 (Takamatsu this time) to serve as the City of St. Petersburg's 8th (or 9th) Sister City Exchange Teacher at Takamatsu First Senior High School (Takamatsu Dai-Ichi Koto Gakko).
I returned to the US in the fall semester of 1975 to pursue graduate study in developmental psychology at the University of Viriginia, receiving my Master's degree in 1977 and my doctorate in 1980 (although I finished in August 1979). postdoctoral fellowhship. I took a position at Syracuse University (Syracuse, NY) in the Fall of 1981. I have been here since then.
Along the way I've published a variety of articles and books, sang as a soloist and chorus member in 3 major choirs, been in two significant, long term relationships, become a SCUBA instructor, and travelled all over the world. I served as an Associate Dean (so I taught less and did less research) and am an Associate Professor in two departments.
I April of 2019 I purchased a home in Sebring. FL (St. Pete is just too expensive). In January 2020 U began a sabbatical leave (in Sebring) and during the 2020-2021 school year I-ll be teaching online (from Sebring). I'll officially retire May 2021.
I'm 90 minutes fro. St. Pete and visited several times before the pandemic struck including an Eckerd reunion with Eric Bredenberg (also LHS class of 70).
