Bruce's Story

Settled in Texas after leaving Michigan touring through Canada and the West Coast for 6 months on my Bicycle. Join the Peace Corp in 1980 but didn't take the assignment due to they wanted to send me to Yemen and that was while all the middle East stuff was going on and didn't feel safe being sent there.. Hadn't plan on staying here in Texas so i Hitchhiked around the country for another 3 months before staying in Fort Worth. the convincing factor was working outside in February starting the morning at 30* and by noon it being in the 70s and getting paid to get a sun tan meant allot (still does). Had a girlfriend in Seattle during that time that i had met in Rochester that wanted me to move in with her there but I wanted her to move with me to Texas, that didn't work out. So I ended up meeting my future Wife here and after dating for 3 years ended up getting married, been 38 years now. Have 2 Kids (late in life) oldest turning 22 this year and the youngest turning 18 this year. Lots of wild oats to sow from skiing, sailing, scuba diving tons of cars and up to 18 Motorcycles at one time. Raced Grand Prix Motorcycles for a while even finishing 6th in the country in my class. Have been in business for myself since 1980 Building and Remodeling Houses and a few Years of Commercial work, Also was a Construction Coordinator for Habitat for Humanity working with the Texas Rangers Baseball Team building Houses in there Parking Lot. Building 18 house over the years with all volunteers teaching them the basic...Expand for more
s of house building Should be retired by now but thanks to Covid there is more work than ever. Looking forward for when my kids get out of College so I can go back to Racing Bikes again. For a bit of history I am a first born American, have dual citizenship, US and Canada and Jackson was not my original last name. It was Jakubowski my grandparents change it in the 40s', My dad was a first born Canadian. How we do get around Peace to all. Have recently gotten a new hip in 2021 and this year looking at getting a new right shoulder this year so since 1976 when I got hit by a car while riding my motorcycle and had to have my left foot screwed back onto my leg I will now have my 14th major Orthopedic operation (truly the 6 million dollar man if it wasn't for insurance). We have a saying from when I worked at the hospital. Old age is for when you pay for the fun you had as a youth. My fun is not over yet and I have seen my death and it happens on a bike --hit and run--. Update soon may be going back to Canada for work and definitely want to get back to Rochester for a Coney Dog. While in Rochester in 2016 I took my kids to my favorite restaurants, August Moon (nothing like this in Texas) and Lipumas Coney Island. My kids loved it so much that after we got back to Texas I was able to convince Lipumas to send me dos and sauce for a 4th of July party. To get anything close to Lipumas I have to drive gor about 8 hours to a small town near Big Bend and they are from Bay City so not quite the same.
