Bryan's Story
One of my most memorable childhood memories I will never forget is going mosquito hog hunting. As a little black boy growing up in New Orleans, I was always fascinated with mosquito hogs. Now most of you are wondering, what is a mosquito hog? Well growing up and being educated in the public schools, there were a lot of names that we gave to insects and animals because we simply didn't know the official names for these insects. The official name for a mosquito hog is dragonfly. I could not wait until summer time would come, because that was when the mosquito hogs would appear. I was captivated by the variety of colors and sizes they would come in. The day I fell in love with this insect was a day while in a field full of mosquito hogs. Flying all around me and landing on flowers or what ever they could land on. I just stuck out my finger in the air and held it high, a bright leopard wing mosquito hog landed on my finger. I was amazed and captivated at that point. I spent most of my summer days chasing and catching mosquito hogs. I learned how to sneak up to one and slowly reach toward their wings and snap my forefinger and thumb shut on it's wing. I soon learned which colors were the hardest to catch. I would spend hours with my best friend Kevin hunting mosquito hogs. One day while hunting we saw the largest mosquito hog ever. Now we had a even bigger quest, to find and catch the giant mosquito. green mosquito hog. The giant mosquito became our goal because we rarely seen one and if we did, you could never get close enough to catch. All that came to an end one evening after the sun went down. We just happen to walking along a fence near the apartment complex where we stayed. We came upon this giant mosquito hog just perched upon the top of this fence. Now we knew from our extensive skills in hunting these creatures that when their wings were down this was the best time to approach and catch them. This one was huge and green. I was scared a little because this was the biggest I ever attempted to catch. The fear was the size of the pinchers that these creatures have inside their mouths. The pinchers close sideways to bite. Being pinched by smaller one's I kinda thought that size would probably hurt. I was still determined to catch this one because I knew that this would give me the title of "Master Moquito Hog Hunter". I approached slowly and reached out with my patented technique and snapped my fingers around those massive wings and caught it. I must have awakened it because it flapped real hard and whipped it's body around and pinched my finger with those giant pinchers. I held one tight and screamed like a little girl from the grip it had on my finger. I took my other hand and grabbed both wings and freed it from my finger. My friend and I were proud of this accomplishment. I now had the title of Master Mosquito Hunter. As I grew older I later became fascinated with a different creature, the elusive human female.
