Bryan's Story

My father is the son of dirt farmers from Alabama. My mother is the daughter of a clerk from New Jersey and banker from South Carolina. My parents divorced when I was 5. Both parents remarried others and remained married. My father (deceased 2016) became a real estate developer/builder. My mother became an admissions officer and a national recruiter in higher education. I am an native of Orlando, Florida, but have lived in Tampa and Miami, as well as Cloverdale, Indiana, and Milledgeville, Georgia - and now Salina, Kansas. I lived in a historic home in Milledgeville (the state capitol before and during the Civil War). I owned a condo in Miami that I wish I could take with me wherever I move - the floor plan was that good. I am the oldest of six children. My sibling include Keith (-1 year), Rusty (-3 years), Jay (-10 years), Nicole (-13 years) and Cyndi (-15 years). My son, Justin, was born in 2001 and his daughter was born in 2021.. I was widowed in 2010. Keith finally fully retired from the military in 2021. He has two daughters, three stepdaughters, a stepson, and five grandsons. Rusty is a systems administrator in the healthcare industry. He has a son, a daughter, and a grandson. Jay is once again a trainer for a specialty pharmaceuticals company, but also works with disadvataged kids and loves it. Nicole joined a religious cult and disavowed the family. She has at least 10 children. Cyndi nearly died in a tragic auto accident and lives with my stepmother. I graduated from Cloverdale High School in 1977. I have bachelor's degrees in psychology and liberal studies and a master's in instructional systems from the University of Central Florida (where I took a class with HS friend Jeana Carol Sims - 1000 miles and 10 years after graduation!). I also have an associate's degree in interior design with a specialization in kitchen and bath design from Seminole State College. After 20 years working in higher education (student affairs, alumni affairs and development) and then 5 years in philanthropy (managing the grant-making process for a top-50 foundation), I became a high-end kitchen designer. In 2008, I joined the faculty of Eastern Florida State College, teaching kitchen and bath design classes part-time in addition to my full-time design work. I loved teaching. When the housing market tanked and there was no longer a client base for upscale custom kitchen design, I returned to higher education - rising to assistant vice president for advancement (CAO). In 2014, I began pursuit of a 15-year passion championing the homeless and the people and organizations that support the homeless. I mentored recent college graduates working in various nonprofits serving the homeless throughout Central Florida and I am working with others to develop legislation that would allow a new type of shelter for homeless youth living apart from their parents. In 2016, I relocated to Salina, Kansas, to consult for the local university and now lead a group of success coaches -- collectively, we mentor 300 first-time-n-college students to maximize opportunities for success during their first year in college as preparation for a successful colle...Expand for more
ge career. I don't believe I'll ever retire. I had a Honda motorcycle and a boat in high school, but no car although I'm a car guy. I've owned a few interesting cars and a few very common ones--1973 Chevrolet Vega, 1969 Dodge Coronet, 1973 Cadillac Sedan DeVille, 1973 Buick Riviera, 1961 Volkswagen Beetle (most dangerous), 1980 Ford Escort, 1982 Subaru Wagon, 1990 Ford Escort, 1993 Subaru Legacy (remained in the family until 2013), 1999 Ford Mustang Convertible (40th birthday gift to myself), 2001 Ford Ranger, 2005 Mercedes C320 Sport (fastest - at 130 - and best handling, but terribly unreliable), 1988 Mercedes 560 SL (beautiful but uncomfortable), 2012 Ford Fusion (totaled by Justin), 2010 Ford SportTrac, 2016 Fusion (totaled by me), and 2019 Ford Fusion. I'm looking forward to owning a customized '64 Ford wagon, '61 Ford Thunderbird and '68-'70 Ford F-series. In the late 1990s or early 2000s a custom car concept I proposed was an honorable mention in a national magazine - cool! One morning in about 2008 I was making breakfast and heard a familiar voice on TV--Brian Nees from Cloverdale on My Classic Car talking about his Crosley wagon! Although I have a strong vocabulary and was trained to be a high school English teacher, I do not enjoy reading "literature." I have a very active and vivid imagination, so I don't need someone else's. However, I do enjoy reading my youngest brother's, Jay's, short stories because they are such funny slices of life (similar to Flannery O'Connor). My favorite place to vacation is New Orleans. I spent a week in the Bourbon Orleans in 1999. That was the best vacation ever! I traveled to Tegucigalpa, Honduras, in 2000, to announce a $500,000 grant and help Habitat for Humanity build houses. I've also enjoyed visiting Vancouver, BC/Canada, and Monterrey, California (most beautiful place I've ever been although Falls Creek Falls, Tennessee, is very close). My dream vacation, however, is to travel across Canada by train and then cruise to Alaska. The only sport I am passionate about is NASCAR Cup Racing. My all-time favorite driver is the late Davey Allison (#28 Ford) and my favorite current driver is Kyle Busch (#18 Toyota-2015 Cup Champion). Justin and I enjoy following the Kansas City Chiefs and UCF Knights football teams. Once COVID goes away, we'll be able to go to KWU football games in town. I am a baker. Cheesecake, fruitcake, and whipping cream pound cake are my specialties. I love Christmas music, but not so much the supposed "holiday." Because of the raw emotion and intellect he conveys, I am a fan of Pete Townshend's music (in fact I'll name a future pet beagle Peter Townshend if I ever have time for a pet). Seeing The Who perform in Orlando in 1982 and 2014 were extraordinary experiences. I've seen The Police, Rod Stewart, The Fixx, and The Moody Blues perform numerous times each. I've seen Genesis, Rush, Pink Floyd, The B52s, and Wynton Marsalis perform once each. I enjoyed the 20th high school reunion. It was more welcoming than I expected and I thank all the classmates/spouses who spoke with me. I remain shy even though I spend all day talking to/teaching college students.
