Bryan's Story
Tell my story? Hmmm. Gee, this might take a while. Let's see: Born in Poughkeepsie, NY. Mother is an ex-NYC public school teacher. Father, was a programmer for IBM. Parents separ ated when I was 4. Went to Oak Grove elementary and completed first grade. my teachers were Torebeck and Fischer. Came down to Flushing in the summer of '75 to spend a week with my grandparents and then my father moved back into the house and told us to not come back. So, I stayed in Flushing and began second grade at PS 163 that fall. My mother tried to get a job with the board of ed but they weren't hiring 'cause of the fiscal crisis so she went to Katherine Gibbs secretarial school and graduated at the top of her class. Soon, she got a job with American Express Co.
I was in the little league (flushing copy) and then the cub scouts, weblos, and boy scouts. Troup 183. Mr. Murphy. We met in St. Ann's basement and sometimes in St. Ann's school gym. My teachers at 163 were(in order and spelling doesn't count): Thompson, Cohen, Folker, Weintroub, and Freund.
Graduated from PS163 in 1980 and then went to IS237 Rachel Carson School. Some of my teachers were: Dinhoffer, Dinstein, Grossman, Lefelt, Morenstein, Gerbe, Cohen(math), Cohen(Spanish), Petrovsky, Jackel, Soebell, Weiner, Boksel, and Douch. Graduated in 1983.
Then on to John Bowne High School. I lost my Grandfather in 1985. I Graduated from High School in 1986.

y uncle's machine shop (Forrest Mechanical) part time while I went to Queensborough Community College full time.
Graduated in 1990 with an AAS degree in electronic technology. That summer I lost my father and in the fall started working in my major at American Transcoil Corp. After a year there I grew unhappy and took the test for Transit Electrical Helper. Six months later I was hired by the NYC Transit Authority as a Light Maintainer's Helper and six months after that I decided to go back to college at NYC Technical College(CUNY) to get my Bachelor's Degree. In 1993, I met my wife Alba and we were married in 1995, folling my promotion to Light Maintainer. Our daughter Sophia was born in 1996 and that same year we visited Colombia and brought my stepchildren back to the US with us. At the end of that same year we bought our house too.
At work I was workng for Infrastucture's Station Restoration Program and learning the electrical trades while rebuilding stations such as: Fifth Ave., Rawson, Lowery, and Bliss Streets.
In 1998, I graduated from NYC Tech with a Bachelors in Electromechanical Technology and in 1999 I was promoted to Maintenance Supervisor. I continued to rebuild subway stations such as Neptune Ave., Eighth St., and the Police Precinct at 161 Street-Yankee Stadium. I was working at Eighth Street on that fateful day in September 2001 and was part of the crew of city workers dispatched to the WTC immediately following the collapse.
