Herbert's Story

Military U.S Navy from 1981-2005. Very rewarding experience. First tour was USS Kitty Hawk ( SEP 1981-NOV 1984), worked as Hangar Deck blueshirt then AIMD hydraulic shop. Made two deployments on the Hawk. The 1984 deployment was memorable for the collision with a Russian submarine in the Sea of Japan. Next stop was NAS Miramar (NOV 1984- JAN 1988), working at the transient line. I loved being out on the line and being around all the different type aircraft that came through there and the people you meet. Staging aircraft for the airshow was always fun. Staying at Miramar, I went to VF-2 Bounty Hunters (MAY 1988 - DEC 1991) to work on F-14A's. Made two deployments with the squadron onboard USS Ranger (CV-By GOD-61), including OPERATION Desert Storm in 1991. We won the Battle "E" and Clifton award that year. We had some characters in that squadron but it was fun. Maybe I was crazy, but I went from there to the RAG squadron, VF-124 Gunfighters (JAN 1992-DEC 1994). We had A and D model Tomcats, lots of them. I remember the dets to El Centro and the ship. I enjoyed being on the airshow demo launch crew. Mostly I remember Sondra, the girl who still has my heart. The squadron decommissioned in October of 1994 and became VF-101 Det Miramar responsible for F-14D training. I left shortly after that for the USS Abraham Lincoln (FEB 1995-AUG 1998). I did two deployments as part of AIMD onboard the Abe...Expand for more
, 1995 and 1998. The ship changed homeport from Alameda to Bremerton and finally to Everett, WA. Back to San Diego and NAS North Island AIMD (SEP 1998-OCT 2001). I worked in the tire shop and then airframes division production control. Last stop was NAS Lemoore, CA and the Tophatters of VFA-14 (NOV 2001-MAY 2005). VFA-14 is the oldest squadron in the Navy. I got to Lemoore just in time for the squadron to transition from Tomcats to F/A-18E Super Hornets. I did one 8 month deployment onboard USS Nimitz as part of OPERATION Iraqi Freedom. I also did a two month det onboard USS Ronald Reagan from Norfolk, VA to San Diego, CA traveling around South America. Most of my career was spent in San Diego with time in Alameda, Bremerton, Everett and Lemoore. I enjoyed the port calls which let me visit places such as: Singapore, Phillipines, Hong Kong; Hawaii; Korea; Australia; Thailand; Diego Garcia; United Arab Emirates; Victoria, Canada; Bahrain; Rio De Janeiro; Valparaiso, Chile; and Lima, Peru. Also the squadron dets to Fallon and Key West were an experience. I always enjoyed being on the flight line or on the flight deck of the carrier, to me there was nothing else like it. Most of all though, I enjoyed the people that I worked with, from all walks of life. People who were willing to sacrifice to serve their country. I currently work as a civilian at the F/A-18E/F training command, VFA-122 Flying Eagles.
