C. N.'s Story
Life
I was born on a farm in Baker Township, Guthrie Co., Iowa, in 1936. We moved to a farm north of Winterset and I attended De Soto Consolidated School through the 8th grade. I attended High School in Des Moines, Guthrie Center, Phoenix, AZ; and National City, California.
I went on active duty with the U.S. Naval Reserve for 2 years (1955-1957)and was rated as an Electronics Tech 3rd class upon release from active duty.
I worked for Pactific Tel & Tel in various capactities from 1957 through 1968 when I moved to Alaska.
I married for the first time in 1964 and thereby became the father of 4 children.
I graduated from San Diego City College with an associate degree in electronics in 1968.
In Alaska, I worked for various cities and companies including Fairbanks and Anchorage telephone utilities. I also worked for more than 4 years on the trans-alaska pipeline while it was being built and afterwards in the North Slope oil fields.
I spent a couple of years in California (1978-1980) and returned to Alaska to work from 1980-1987 when I retired for the first time.
I went to college ...Expand for more
in Missoui and completed the requirements for a BS in print journalism.
I then completed one year of work on a master's degree in information and communication science at Ball State Univ in Muncie, IN.
My wife Susan and I moved to Bangor, Me, for her first master's degree in speech communication in 1993.
In 1994 I returned to Alaska and gave up retirement for 5 years while I worked again at the City of Fairbanks in the telephone department.
I retired in 1999 and had been traveling around the lower 48 states visiting family and friends for 3 or 4 months at at time. Now I am mostly at home and travel much less.
I am very involved in genealogy and have traced my line back to the Middle Ages and Charlemagne, the Holy Roman Emperor and beyond. It is fun and engrossing pastime. Every time you find someone, you then start looking for two more (their parents).
I started researching family history in 1988 when I was in college in Missouri. I still work four or more hours every day on research for no fee for my friends and family and my wife's friends and family.
