Candice's Story
After all the years that I planned to be an engineer, I changed my mind - I went to Georgetown University and majored in International Affairs (with a concentration in African Studies - I spent a semester living in Cameroon). Then I got a Master's in Library & Information Science at the University of Texas at Austin. After graduating from UT in 1998, I made my way back to the D.C. area, where Sean Murphy, a friend from college, helped me get a job with him at UUNET, doing web hosting technical support. I later transferred to a position doing intranet maintenance and tools development for UUNET's network operations center.

Luckily we were both able to find better jobs elsewhere; for three years I was an Information Technology Management Specialist (that's government fancy-talk for "webmaster") at the National Transportation Safety Board. I was a one-day "Jeopardy!" champion in January 2006. Tired of a 3 hour commute every day (we live in Loudoun County, Virginia), I quit my job shortly thereafter, and became a columnist for a local weekly and a neighborhood blogger.
In August 2008, we adopted newborn twins. I'm currently a stay-at-home-mom, and have developed an all-new skill set while raising these sweethearts -- although training in diplomacy and conflict resolution is starting to come in handy as we approach the terrible twos!
