Cardinal's Story

Life The basics, I've grown up, whether I liked it or not, out and have many memories of my past that influence my daily life. I think back to my friends, both seen and unseen, that have given me the gifts of their time and support. Currently, I have a family and work to teach Agriculture and Math in a Palatka, FL Middle School. I have two great children in college, dogs and a wife that has supported all of us. She has allowed me to focus providing guidance, support and love. Things I've always struggled with. The path that brought me here started in Frostproof with a so many people to guide a young person. I lived with my brothers, Grandmother and Grandfather, and Mother. I had family, Cheryl & Berry for cousins and a small town that I still miss. I attended elementary school and met many people, including travel to Lake Wales with the gifted program. I also was a member of the First Baptist Church with many memories that include frequent visits to the Rayburn's. I had a neighbor, Bill Watson, that took me fishing and hunting; one of my most valued memories. The world, as I knew it, was within a walk or bicycle ride from Peachtree Ave. During the 5th grade, Mom got a new job in Dade City and we moved that summer. I met many new faces, found out about beer, cigarettes, cussing and other things and role models that I really didn't need. Alan Hemphil was a neighbor and great freind for that time up on Mitchell Street. We rode the school bus there since, bicycling places was harder but, with a little effort, you could make it to the Baptist church for activities. Life changed there. After losing my Mother, we returned to Polk County. Grandaddy didn't leave Frostproof, Grandma went back there and the brothers went to Lake Wales and attempted to make adjustments. That family, mentioned earlier, was able to reabsorb us and provided a "home." I started Jr. High in December, alone and uncertain. Jimmy Desroache stuck out his hand and became a friend; I reconnected ...Expand for more
with many from the "gifted" program mentioned earlier, my first glimpse of how small the world can be. Music and athletics became a part of me as well as an interest in academics. My kids in Math find it very funny that their teacher didn't learn his times tables until the 8th grade. A skinny kid named Lawrence Clermont became my best friend through school. I have had many new freinds and aquaintences but have never replaced Lawrence from the "best" position. High School came and brought Agriculture, Veterinary work and steps to college. Milton Bryan is still a hero. As I traveled with the FFA, once again the world shrank and I was able to contact with lost freinds from both Frostproof and Dade City. I was also blessed with many more from other cities. The college that couldn't wait, came and went quickly. A couple of years at PCC in Winter Haven then 4 in Gainesville. A lot more folks that have positively influenced me. There are many negatives that have happened but, have you noticed?, those are lower on the quick to recall and share list. I ended up working full time and finished college part time with a BS in Ag. Once in North FL, I stayed, it reminded me of the small towns that I grew up in. The doctoral dreams had been thoroughly rained upon. While out and about one night, I met this gal. I have been chasing after her ever since. She has a habit of picking up stray and lost animals and I seem to have fit the bill. I have a life that started at that point. We were married in '91, not always happily but we have been learning to kiss and make up. I'm still dealing with many of the compulsions, opinions and damaging habbits that I have built from my experiences but, she has helped me to make the best of many of them. With her support, I have worked from janitor to manager in both private firms and with the State of Florida. Now, we both teach for Putnam Schools and I have found much of my happiness is in sharing how to learn with youth. I have been blessed.
