Carl's Story

These days, I am a father and a grandfather. I am also a cancer wodower, as my late wife Sue passed away in 2011 after battling cancer for 15 years. We were married for 32 incredible years. She has been gone now 13 years. I myself have never remarried. I have two grown children. My daughter Chrissy is a flight attendant for a major airline. My son Eric does home renovation. I also have two grandchildren. My granddaughter Brianna is married and is a registered nurse working ICU at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, IL. My grandson Anthony is a music major at Northern Illinois University in Dekalb, IL. He will be graduating December of this year. I turned 70 in February and still work full time. I do claims work for a major Healthcare service. Before that, I was an IT Technician doing contract work for various companies. At present, I have no plans to retire. In my spare time, I am a woodcarver. For 20 years, I made my own Native American style flutes in a workshop I had at my old house. I also play both the flute and the didgeridoo. I am a diehard Star Wars fan! I am also a fan of hair bands like Poison, Cinderella, Bon Jovi, Britney Fox, and Ratt. I also listen to symphonic metal groups like ...Expand for more
Nightwish, Epica, and Within Temptation. I' m also a huge fan of a music duo known as The Harp Twins. They are identical twin sisters who play both concert and electric harps, and specialize in playing covers for songs from groups like Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth, The Rolling Stones, AC/DC, Billy Idol, among others, as well as compose and perform their own songs. Their concerts feature a pair of identical twin brothers, The Volfgang Twins, who play their own drums and perform a style of music they call Viking Metal. Most recently, a year ago, my daughter gave me a DNA test that tells you your heritage. I thought mine would come back with a number of various nationalities. Instead, to my shock and surprise, my results came back 99% Scandinavian and 1% Balkan. I then started doing a family tree on Ancestry.com and have traced my family history back to the 1300s in Norway and Denmark. My grandparents and great grandparents came to America from Southern Norway. I also found out my real family name was taken from a village in Norway called Gullaug. My real family name is Olsen. I am named after my great grandfather on my grandmother's side, Karl Thorson. I am by heritage and nationality Norwegian.
