Carlos's Story
Life
I'm very happy with where my life has taken me. I got married in 1989 to Jody Sampson from Tenino, WA. We have four children (Cassandra Joanne - 17, Matthew Carlos - 15, Jaclyn Jody-12, Emily MacKenzie - 6). Our permanent residence is in Port Orchard, WA. I have spent all of my post high school time in the U.S. Navy. I spent my first 8 years on submarines as an Electricican. I received a commission in 1995 as a Surface Warfare Officer. In 2006, I was sent to Iraq and was the Electronic Warfare Officer for 3rd Brigade Combat Team of the 101st Airborne and 82nd Airborne Divisions. I am currently stationed at the Afloat Training Group Pacific at Naval Station San Diego. I will retire from the Navy after 20 years as a Lieutenant Commander in January 2008.
School
I attended Charles M. Brown Elementary School (K-1) in Diamond Springs, CA and Lacey Elementary School(2-5) in Lacey, WA.
Lacey was a nice place. In the second grade, my best friend accidentally knocked me out with an aluminum bat during a baseball game at recess. I was out for a couple of minutes. The bat hit me in my left temple and required 7 stitches.
Next, I attended Rochester Middle School in Rochester(6-7), WA and Tumwater Middle School in Tumwater, WA (6). I graduated from Rochester High School in Rochester, WA in 1987. I was the class Salutatorian.
I made virtually all of my best friends due to sports. My best memories are the ones I have from playing soccer. Everyone of my teammates was a really good friend. I will always remember the impact that their friendship and humor had on my life. It helped to make me the person I am today.
College
I attended Olympic College in Bremerton, WA from 1993 to 1995 and University of San Diego from 2000 to 2003. I received a B.A/B.S in Electrical Engineering with a minor in Mathematics.
USD was a lot of fun. I was the Engineering Department's token old guy. It was a lot of fun, but also a lot of hard work. I enjoyed working with the students and staff alike. USD is an excellent school, and you can't beat it for class size, individual attention, and lab time.
Workplace
I have been in the Navy for the last 20 years. I started out as an submarine electrician. I was commissioned as a naval officer in July of 1995 and have moved rather quickly up the ranks. For the last 12 years, I have served as a middle and upper level division and departmental manager. I am currently a Lieutenant Commander. I have served on 1 submarine and 3 surface ships. These jobs have taken me all over the world, but mainly ports in the Pacific. The work has been overwhelming at times, but I have always enjoyed working with fellow Sailors. I am currently inspecting and assessing the engineering pla...Expand for more
