Carlyn's Story

Life I've had a good life! For this I can thank my parents who gave me a good start, a good education and good values. I enjoyed growing up in Roselle, NJ, a great state from which to come. I enjoyed my days at Washington School and ACHS. I had the opportunity to study at Albright College. I think I was too serious of a student and should have had more fun, but I didn't know the difference at that time and was deternined to graduate in 4 years. So I can't regret that. After college I taught Home Economics at J.E. Soehl Jr. High School in Linden, NJ for two years and enjoyed those years very much. Two years later, I joined the US Peace Corps and worked in the schools in Itaborai, RJ, Brazil teaching to 4 H Clubs (Clubes Agricolas). I also began teaching ESL at this time. During this time in Brazil I became the silly teenager that I had never been in my youth. I'm glad that I had the opportunity to finally become a teenager, but I was also responsible enough to perform my duties as a Peace Corps Volunteer. After two years in the Peace Corps I returned to Roselle and worked as a Home Ec teacher for the Job Corps in Jersey City, NJ. The year was 1969. After teaching for the Job Corps for eight months I was married and resigned my position. In those days it was common for women to stop working when they became married and become a homemaker and mother. I immediately became the mother of a darling 2 year old girl and later had two children of my own. After 3 years living...Expand for more
in NJ we moved to Neenah, Wisconsin. We lived in Neenah for 5 1/2 years and moved to Palatine, IL in September 1978. My husband worked for United Airlines at the time and I was busy raising 3 children, working as a volunteer ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher (later full time as a certified ESL teacher), and working on a Master's Degree in ESL. In 1989 we moved to Ogden, Utah. There I taught ESL at Weber State University (1/2 year) and later st Ogden High School (14 1/2 years). I had never envisioned the opportunities which would be open to me as an experienced ESL teacher. Between 2001 and 2004 I have spent 1 year as a Fulbright Exchange teacher in Hungary, and 2 - 3 weeks as a teacher ambassador in Kazakhstan, Japan, and Armenia. These opportunities have all been available to me through the US State Department. So, you can see, I've had an intersting and varied life, and I hope it will continue the same way for many years. I have made many wonderful friends throughout the world and I look forward to the day when all citizens of our world can live together in friendship and Peace. June 2005 - Well, it is time to add to my bio. I just retired. I hope I will continue to lead a structured and rewarding life. This was not my choice but it was the best thing to do since my husband of 35 years is retired and not in good health. As soon as Ron gets stronger we will be traveling all over the USA to visit our 3 children and 9 grandchildren. I am looking forward to that!
