Carman's Story
I grew up in Brandon in the big white house on 11th Street East. It seemed a lot bigger then somehow. My first job (not counting the paper route with the Brandon Sun) was carhopping at A & W. Harvey Carroll was a great boss! And we got paid for hanging out where everyone else cruised!
I worked in Calgary for 10 years, Ottawa for 27, Washington for 5, Rome for 2: ahhh, pizza, pasta, vino, and espresso, all served with a generous portion of Italian gusto for life!
My work has taken me around the world many times. Now in New York working with the United Nations and living in Manhattan. It's a long, long way from Brandon! Millions of strangers instead of the friendly greetings and waves I still get from total strangers on the streets back in Manitoba when I get there. I feel lucky each day to weave my way through the pedestrian traffic without getting body-checked too hard or frequently, and very privileged to work with many dedicated individuals who put themselves in harm's way every day to help make the world better and safer for the rest of us.
My three children, Garnet, Chelsea and Kensey are all in Canada. I keep hoping for grandchildren and a good reason to ...Expand for more
retire, but in-laws for my own children first would be a step in the right direction. Coming from a family of 7 siblings, holidays seem much too quiet!
Update 2 September: Just moved to Long Island City to save $40K per year in rent (wish I was kidding...). Seems like a great place so far, though I am definitely several decades older than most of my new neighbors!
Update 2015: Garnet is now married to Georgia and living in Phoenix, so Christmases are spent in warm sunshine instead of bitter cold in Ottawa. I am getting ready to retire again (hopefully 3rd try is charmed). I have bought a condo in Escazu, Costa Rica (near the capital of San Jose). It is up at about 5,000 ft. elevation, so temperatures are in the 70s or low 80s year round. Most Canadians choose the beach areas on the Pacific side, but it is much too hot and muggy for me there. Four months and 11 days to go, and I'm READY.
Update April 2017:
Now living in Costa Rica about 7 months of the year, waiting for my residency visa to come through. I spend summers at the beach house in North Carolina, when it is rainy season here in Costa Rica. Enjoying retirement, wondering how I ever found time to work.
