Carmen R Jimerson's Story
Life
...standing in her mom and dad's garage on Honore (the street behind our house on Wood Street) talking about SharonChristopher, Gillian, Sandra & Marcia; Rosina and I contemplated old age and the required act we would would need to perform.... DANCING. She and I both had seen the "others". The older people... brothers-Gigi, Harold, and Rodney and sisters- Wanda and Joanie (hers) and my aunt Rita, my mother and their husbands. They danced together, swaying hand in hand and sometimes, cheek to cheek. They mentioned "killin the roach," "twine time" and "basketball" but those were the less interesting moves. She made a suggestion that we "practice" the Shingling.. so no to look like fools IF EVER I should dance with her brother Rodney; and if ever she should be invited to a COTILLION. We danced hummingmusic there is the dusty space of her garage... I made faces seen on the older persons faces... she tried to look " romatic". I laughed at her efforts of trying to interest me and her comeback was that "at lest she wasn't intersted in other gir...Expand for more
ls." I wondered where that suggestion had surfaced from. Neither was I. I blew it off as a frined with dashed feelings. I had laughed at her attempt at looking mature. Again we danced... until rodney appeared with one of his highschool classmates. I had to stop because Rodney, at the time, was my heart throb. I was in love with his grey eyes. They were what made him different. No one else had anything like them... except my brother who had greenish hazel eyes' but then... that was my brother. His question of what we were doing sent a flush of embarassment over my face; and encourataged ehr to respond with, "She's trying to get me interested." From those days on through highschool I really scrutined my friend and her attitude toward other people, especially the many female classmates we sheared over twelve years in time. Perhaps the high calling of playing the role of quadroon in the 20th century was just a little too strong for an up and coming third grader in the 1960's. didn't she know that her brother was a ...man, that meant I liked MALES.
