Carmen's Story
Well, let's see....I grew up in a very small town in rural Alabama. Small, but really safe and filled with lot's of love. Finished high school and was off to college. I chose Stillman College and was happy to be there. Upon completing a BS degree (1980) in Biology with a minor concentration in Chemistry I ended up in Birmingham at Southern Research Institute; where I soon realized was not the place for me. I left SRI for UAB's Research department. The job was interesting, challenging and rewarding, but alas, this was not what I was looking for. I left UAB for the Research Department of Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children (Tampa FL). This is where I honed my skills as a Biochemist. I loved the research but longed for greener pastures.
Leaving Tampa for Biotechnology/Pharmaceutical in Massachusetts I found my true calling and the career of my dreams (I Loveeeeeeee Science). I became an Analytical Biochemis...Expand for more
t and managed a Core Laboratory Facility for one of the top Biotech firms in the world. It was in Boston that I continued my education, receiving certifications in Management, Project Management, and two Master degrees; one in Project Management and another in Quality Systems Management. It was also here where I did my Ph.D graduate work in Business.
Massachusetts had really been a very positive experience. The multi-ethnic culture is amazing (this provides wonderful restaurants, arts, museums etc.). The historical aspects of the city are like no other in the US, excellent for those interested in the birth of our country. When I'm not doing science I enjoy exploring the the various neighborhoods (you would be surprised at the historical nuggets one can encounter. Traveling is another past time that I enjoy. I try to take a trip at least once a year. If you ever see me around (Class of 80) do say hello.
