Carol's Story

A year has passed, turned 49 in Feb. My husband returned safely from Iraq in Jan., after a 14 month tour. Justin has yet to return home on leave from Iraq. He took the 1st R%R to Bratislava, Bulgaria and Eastern Germany. He just took his 2nd for 2 weeks in Thailand. Jeremey graduated from the EOD school in the Navy and I flew to FL to attend and we drove home together carrying all of his property in a Penske truck, towing his car. His dad was able to attend his jump school graduation at Ft. Benning, GA with my dad. Tim flew up and drove back with Jeremey, who once again rented a truck and loaded up all of his property which he had stored in our garage. He then took our 3rd son Josh with him on to San Diego to help him move and find an apartment, returning once again for duty assignment. Then he flew Josh back home. He is now assigned to the EOD (Explosive Ordinance Disposal) Mobile Unit One. He was just selected as a Basic EOD Tech to join a Master EOD Tech on a month tour of duty with the Secret Service in D.C., walking the halls of the White House daily. It is terrific to receive his calls and hear all that he has done. He met and petted the First Dog the other day. Jesse, the youngest, graduated the Texas Culinary Le Cordon Bleu Program of Paris in Jan. and his dad was home to attend that graduation with me in Austin. We see him frequently. He is currently a chef at the number one wine establishment in Austin, Vino Vino. Josh is still finding himself, a year later, only now he isn't living in our home any longer since a week ago (today is 29 Apr) which my husband and I are both enjoying our time alone now. We are both taking a class at the local college. I'm taking Photo II and he takes refrigeration at night after work. We only have 3 days left of school. He will have surgery on 7 May for a bone spur behind his achilles tendon. For Mother's Day he purchased me a ticket to return to Madrid, my 9th trip over now. If the swine flu is under control, I fly on Mother's Day, 10 May and return on 9 Jun. Tim is giving me so much money, and for Mother's Day Justin is giving me $500 and Jeremey is giving me a good amount, too. So I plan to use it to return to Portugal. I want to see Lisboa, Bele'm, and Sintra again but this time, as a Catholic, I want to make a pilgrimage to Fa'tima. The sad part is that 13 May is the day that Mary appeared to the 3 children. I arrive in Madrid the 11th, but I don't want to rush off that quick. It would certainly be a sight to behold, all the people, as I witnessed the parade for St. Anthony of Paduah, the patron saint of Lisbon last year. I love the way the Portugese take their Catholicism so deeply and seriously. I think that is one of the reasons I'm drawn back there. Thanks to my boys, I'll be able to do it again. Only this time, instead of my photography teacher joining me and ruining my trip, a friend I have over there that I know well through my cousin is going to join me. He went to school with my cousin's husband as they both grew up in Portugal. He speaks the language and wh...Expand for more
en I emailed him about joining me on a trip there he said absolutely, that he had many friends (hello, won't have to pay for a hotel and probably not much food) and that he hadn't been back in awhile and really looked forward to it. So I am super excited. I'll get to hear fabulous Fado music in the snaky streets of the Alfama district. I only got to the first night I was there last year. I feel bad that I will be leaving just after Tim's surgery, and they will be cutting his achilles tendon, but he knew the dates and he set up the trip for me as my gift. I have lost weight, now down to a size 5 again. It has been awhile since I've seen that number, since '97. I got my hair cut short, more needed dental work though not all is done, an eye exam and new glasses and sunglasses: progressive trifocals! And they said I have cataracts on both eyes. This aging thing so sucks! The good news is that we have great insurance. I was able to get Prada glasses and Fendi sun-glasses, everything for less than just the Prada frames alone cost. I'm almost back to 100% since my shoulder surgery after the 30 year MCHS homecoming reunion. I'm about 80% trying to get my left arm up behind my back. But the pain is all gone and feels much better than it did before the surgery. My husband Tim and I will celebrate our 30th anniversary in July. After I return from Spain and before my anniversary, my dad and I will drive together to OH to see my granddaughter and my husband's side of the family. This has been another one of those busy, wear me out years. Tim has put us in for a family status tour (he and I) back to Saudi Arabia, this time Tabuk. That job won't be open until end of next year so Kuwait City may come available before then. If he weren't having the surgery, we could take the assignment now. We are both looking forward to it, so that we can travel together alone for the first time, now that the boys are all grown and on their own. I can't think of anything else to add. I've pretty much caught up anything new since my last update. I do hope all is well with each of you old and dear friends. Somebody drop me a line sometime. I don't go anywhere to make friends, which is one of the reasons I take at least one class if I am here for a semester, just to have some place to go and people to talk to. That is why I need to escape to other countries to feel alive again. My own home is much like my prison cell. We've been here for 9 years now and I never lived anywhere for 9 straight years in my life. It's about to drive me crazy. I should say I have been here. Tim has been in Iraq 3.5 of those years. And out of the 30 years of marriage, this will be our 10th to be able to celebrate together. It was our 4 boys that kept me going all those lonely years. I'm just happy to have him back home with me now as we try to learn each other all over again. For all of those I got to see at the reunions, it was just the greatest to see you all again. My biggest regret was not making the rounds to everyone, thinking that the moment would last forever.
