carol's Story
I was quite shy in high school. Came from a very dysfuntional family. I was Mike Askwith's girlfriend. We were engaged briefly in high school but did not get married. Mike's mother and father did not like me. Now that I am grown; I understand why. Mike married a very nice lady, named Cathy, while they were in college. Through the years, Mike and I have kept in touch off and on but have not seen each other since shortly after graduation. Mike came to the foster home I was living at to say hello and to introduce me to his son David. I got married six months after graduation to someone I met at a nursing home that I was working at. I have two daughters and three grandchildren. I lived in Iwakuni, Japan with my husband who was serving in the Navy. We moved around alot; as most military families do. Mountain View, CA. Then to Guam for two years. Beautiful island! We got involved in many water sports including scuba diving. WW 2 left many interesting ships, tanks and airplanes to dive on; I loved it! Then we moved to Jacksonville, NC where we bought our first home and put down some roots. Then I got the notion of joining the Navy myself. So, from 83-87 I served as a Navy Dental Technician...Expand for more
. After service I worked with a nice dentist in Anaheim, CA until 97'. I moved up north near the bay area with my sister then moved to Lubbock, TX. I was there three years. Flat, brown, Lubbock, TX. Remember the song, "happiness is Lubbock in the rear view mirror." ? Believe me, it is true. Then I moved to Kansas City, MO in 01' and I have been here ever since. I put myself through nursing school and bought my first home. It took me five years to remodel and restore this little house and now I am upside down and can't sell it. So I guess I will just live here and enjoy the fruits of my labor. I currently work as a hospice nurse and live alone with two Siamese cats: Samson and Jezebel. My eldest daughter, too, works as an RN in the cath lab in a hospital in Las Vegas, NV; which is where I want to move to, as this is where my children and grandchildren live. I am looking forward to the 40th reunion. I am hoping Mike will see his way there. Maybe with a little encouragement from the rest of the class; we can get him out there. He can be found on Facebook. He is the Kuala Bear. Looking forward to seeing as many classmates as possible at the Sept. 2014 reunion. God Bless. Carol Calkins, RN
