Carol's Story
About another 10 years has passed since updating my profile. Here I go!
I am still an RN at the San Francisco VA Medical Center., and have been working in the primary care clinic since 2015. However, have been working from home since the pandemic.
My three sons (Willie, Abraham, Jonah) and I continue to live in beautiful Mendocino County.........Redwood Valley CA......two hours north of the Golden Gate Bridge. We were so fortunate to have my mother with us for three years before she went to heaven in 2012. She was 95.
My grandaughter Adrianna Dicks is now 14 (Abraham's daughter). She was accepted into the AR Johnson Magnet School of Science and Engineering in Augusta GA (6th thru 12th grades). She started 6th grade and is now in 8th grade - all of her classes have been honor and gifted. She loves school and we are sooo proud of her!
Mendocino County built the first green hospital in the United States in Willits (Gateways to the Redwoods). It replaced Frank Howard Memorial , originally built by Charles Howard in honor of his son who was injured in a car accident in 1925 and died because of the lack of a full-service hospital. He was also owner of Seabiscuit at his Ridgewood Ranch in Willits. Seabiscuit is buried there. There is a lot of great history here.

n the United States to ban GMO farming on the ballot in 2003. The first certified organic vineyard, Frey Winery is here in Redwood Valley. The first certified organic brewery is in Ukiah. Local art, music, food and wine fill the community calendars every week until the pandemic. It is slowly and carefully trying to return this summer.
Redwood Valley is only 2.75 sq. miles. We took a big hit with the Redwood Complex Fires in October 2017. Nine lives were lost, and and a few hundred structures. The winds were blowing huge embers at 70 miles/hour. It jumped the Russian River below us and burned all the structures on Road L, except for our house and 5 neighbors. 325 ft of our redwood fencing burned down, and the fire actually came to our front door. One of our neighbors put out the fire on the front porch and the 125 ft fir tree next to my house. Abraham and I were the only ones home at the time, and the sheriffs made us evacuate - with 3 huge pit bulls and 2 cats! The National Guard came in immediately - nobody allowed in for 8 days. The fire burned for 21 days.
Many are still re building on our road and throughout the valley. The 2 neighbors that stayed behind saved 6 homes. The sheriff and military referred to them as "hostiles!"
We feel very blessed to be part of this community. We live a very simple life - so grateful and happy to be living it here.
