Carol's Story

I added to my story - it's at the end of what's written below. March 2016 Well look at that - eight more years have passed!! I have been living in Mexico for most of that time. I call Los Barriles my home now. It is on the east cape of the Baja Peninsula, on the Sea of Cortez in Baja Sur (Baja California south). I just retired from running an RV Park and am into property management. The climate and pace of life here suit me well! All the bad P.R.about Mexico is bullsh*#t. It is much safer here than most cities in America! Some of my time is spent writing stories. I have lots of material accumulated from 20 or so years of traveling around the world, working on yacht deliveries and living in a number of other countries - like Thailand, Australia, UK, Southern Spain/Gibraltar and Costa Rica. My stories have been published locally and I am thinking about putting a collection together for a bigger market. Good to touch base with my past! See you in another few years... Cheers Everybody Cazz (nickname acquired in Europe a few decades ago) November 2008 It has been amusing, emotional, insightful, outrageous and unparalleled, connecting with people who populated the eccentric and inimitable company town and surrounding areas in the 60s and 70s. The Ottawa Valley was both a weird and wonderful place to grow up. As much as we complained about how there was nothing to do in that Paton Place of a one horse town, we were actually fortunate, in many ways. It was a privilege of sorts, to be the company town for AECL (I believe it is CRNL now). We had opportunities not all communities had in that era. The everyone knows everyone factor created a safe, although somewhat incestuous, environment. Some of us suffered/enjoyed a notoriety that hindered/propelled our development and fashioned our characters. Some chose to carry on shaping the history of that region while others, like myself, could not wait to move on to broader horizons. Either way, Deep River and Mackenzie High School played a major role in producing who we are today. I cannot speak for anyone else, but I have an appreciation for the sometimes bizarre, sometimes over-protective (a nice way of saying restrained) sometimes magnanimous influence Deep River and its anomalous and remarkable inhabitants provided in my impressionable youth. Cheers! Life Hello Fellow H.C.s It's hard to believe we are HALF CENTURIANS (or will be shortly). I am actually comfortable with my age because I will not be convinced I look 50 and I certainly don't feel like I imagined 50 would feel like, back when we walked the hallways of Mackenzie High School. I've not returned to Deep River since I moved west with my family in 1974. Since I ventured into this website, all sorts of memories have assaulted me. I haven't maintained contact with anyone from there, not to say I haven't thought about the place and the people, my friends and acquaintances. Anyone of "The Iberville Gang" around? Nancy R., Jane and Patsy L., Chris J., Anne Marie M., Ian A., Barry W., Alan D., Tom H., Andy J.? We certainly made memories in those impressionable years. One way to sum up my life in as few words as possible is: - NEVER MARRI...Expand for more
ED, NEVER PREGNANT. These are choices I made and I am without regrets. I've travelled, worked and lived abroad for half my adult life. I do have a connection with a man with whom I have had an 'on and off again' relationship for thirty years. I'm living in my customized 32 foot motor home and dividing my time between Vancouver Island (where Barrie lives) and the rest of the mainland. Where ever I go - I'm at home! -more later- At one point in my life - my age, the number of countries I visited around the world, and the total inches of scars on my body -was the same. 34. I guess I had too much time on my hands when I figured that out. I was a passenger in a head on car crash in 1988 on the island of Granada. I had just crossed the Atlantic for the second time - one day on dry land and my life was instantly changed. One of the doctors who attended me, before they sent me to Vancouver in a stretcher, has the same last name as me. Both my driver and the other driver are from New York. My numbers are 1 and 7. The collision was on the 17th day of the 1st month, I was in the hospital in Granada for 7 day, it took 17 hours to fly to Vancouver and I had surgery 7 times!I'll spare you the other 7 and 1 story. You can read it in my book when it's published....................Later After re-reading what I wrote, I realize I left out the part about working as crew on yacht deliveries around the world for about 15 years. (my reference to having crossed the Atantic twice) Work got me to places like the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, South China Seas, Panama Canal -even the Burmuda Triangle. Living in the limited space of sailing vessels was prelude to living in a motor home. I tried living on a small ranch (2 1/2 acres on Vancouver island), then a beautiful new house in Victoria, followed by a new luxurious condo in Kelowna, all of which were great homes - but the need to be mobile is so much a part of me. Living in my 32 foot class "A" motor home, which I customized myself, provides the luxury of being totally self contained. I even have wireless high speed access to the net where ever I go. I'm writing full time and I can do that regardless of where I am. And my 3 year old Schnoodle (schnauzer/poodle cross), Jasper, provides companionship. So...Life is good! Nov. 2018 Well Jasper is 13 now and I'm 26 (selective dyslexia). We are both suffering deteriorating sight and hearing but we still get around ok. Mexico has the right place for us as well as the right climate. We both speak Spanish adequately and we both love beans, rice and tortillas. I make my own tortillas most of the time and there's always a lot of beans on the stove. Cilantro compliments just about everything. The best avocados are available year round. Mangos are seasonal but they can be dried and enjoyed any time. Homemade tacos are my mainstay. Jamaica (pronounced ha-my-ka) is a tea made from rosehips that is more common than lemonade and has lots of vit. C. Sugar cannot be avoided but at least it's raw sugar grown here. There are cottage industry breweries popping up everywhere, so real beer with real flavour is more and more available. And if course there's tequila!
