Carol's Story

After graduating from Morden Collegiate in 1964, I attended Manitoba Teachers College and for two years taught elementary school in Steinbach, Manitoba. That was an experience. I thought I had grown up in a Mennonite community and then I moved to Steinbach... now that was MENNONITE! I married in 1969 and taught another year in Steinbach with a non-Mennonite name. What was an unfortunate experience. Moved to Calgary where my first son was born in 1971 and second son was born in 1973. Since then I have been an editor with a daily newspaper, a reporter for radio and print and a freelance journalist and photographer. In 1989 I joined the not so civil service in British Columbia and retired in 2001. Since retiring I have owned two businesses, both of which I started--one a wedding planning and decor business which I sold in 2005 and a home staging business which I started in 2007 and sold in the fall of 2010. I have two grandchildren. Along the way I was divorced, remarried, widowed, remarried and then widowed again in 2006. None of those are experiences I want to repeat anytime soon. In February 2009 I moved into a new home that my sister, brother-in-law and I built in Mill Bay, 30 minutes up island from Victoria. In October of 2009 I p...Expand for more
articipated in the Royal Victoria Marathon, completing the half marathon in under three hours--just four minutes short of my previous time. If life is about experiences, I had a few and I expect there will be more--lots of chapters yet to be written. Dec 2010--Am back in Australia--having sold my shares in the business. As I write this I am looking at the Indian Ocean Shoreline and watching the early morning joggers along the footpaths. Am about to join them for my daily 10K walk. And then a great Latte at Yello. And this evening--steaks on the barbie... Aug 2011--Back in Canada for another two months and then six in Australia. Lots of time this summer to enjoy the grandkids and sorting through mountains of photographs--both hard copy and digital. September 2012-- Just got back from a month in Europe. Visited more of Bavaria, the Czech Republic and spent two days in Krems, Austria. As usual we rented a car and visited mostly historic towns, and small cities, with one exception of four amazing days in Prague. Visit me on Facebook (Diana Barton) to see what I'm up to now. 2012/13--decided not to go to AU this winter. Have enjoyed spending Christmas with my family and friends. And in January a month in Arizona. Life is definitely good.

HOME THOUGHTS FROM A BROAD
It's been a long time since we've been quarantined, but sometimes it feels as though we still are. It feels risky to be planning our trip to Scotland in spring. That's understandable after two ye

Pauline and I are planning to hike to Manarola today, a short but 'energetic' hike, says the guide book. I think 'energetic' is hike-speak for "Diana, you will be in pain!' But first coffee on the patio.
