Carol's Story

St. Joseph's School of Nursing kept me busy until 1-75. I worked in the Operating Room there until '78 when I went to work for James Buchholz MD, orthopedic surgeon as a private scrub nurse, which to this very day remains my favorite employment! August of '81 I was married to Fred and we moved to Houston. I worked in the med center for 2 mos and hated the drive, settling in Clear Lake at St. John Hospital just across the street from NASA. I have been in the OR as service coordinator for ortho, pain and podiatry (+neuro/spine about 5 yrs) since 1981. Another of my passions has been the St. Luke's/Texas Liver Coalition as a support group leader since 2000. In 1985 we had a beautiful daughter, Elizabeth Anne, who is now at Texas A&M studying animal/dairy science, hoping to graduate in December. She will be in Clovis, NM. this summer visiting a different dairy each day. We spent 10 years or more traveling around Texas, OK, and MO showing her miniature horse, Orion. She won 3rd in the nation in showmanship her senior year in high school. As a family we loved to travel to the Carribean. We were lucky enough to see Ambergris Caye Belize, Roatan Honduras, Jamaica twice and Cozumel too many times to count. Fred and Elizabeth are divers and I was completely satisfied with snorkeling. Key West and Destin Florida were favorite US spots. I am blessed to remain dear friends with Joan Shady Roth, Joyce Wendel Leach and Suzy Gin...Expand for more
ter Rice. All except Joan have been able to visit us here on the Gulf Coast at least once. Our home is half way between Houston and Galveston about one mile from the bay. Yes hurricanes scare the you know what out of me, we were stuck on the freeway (otherwise know as the parking lot) for 27 hours trying to leave when Rita was headed our way!! Ike hit almost head on, thankfully just a little east. My hospital was badly damaged and we worked out of our outpatient surgery center for about 2 months before moving back in with the clean-up team still working for the next 4 months. Our home was spared damage for the most part although I just found out we need a new roof. Freezers full of food were given to neighbors and in the very end to people in nearby San Leon which was devastated. My newly bearing pecan tree was toppled, so now I've just plalnted an apple tree in addition to the avocado, Meyer lemon, lime and Satsuma orange trees. Luckily Elizabeth is just 2 hours north so I evacuated with our neighbors to her apartment and stayed for a week! Five dogs in one apartment was the only obstacle. My husband, Fred, passed January 27, 2008. It has been the hardest thing life has thrown at me yet, but I know that I will survive! It is now March 2009 and life is great. Elizabeth has about 9 months until she graduates and we are both thrilled about the future! I'd love to hear from any of you and catch up on all the news. Carol
