Carol's Story
Went to Kettering University (formerly GMI) in Flint. During college, I had two knee surgeries to repair ACL tears (one in each knee) and discovered autocrossing. In high school, I loved driving snowmobiles fast, but autocrossing was amazing. It’s basically driving through an obstacle course (set up with traffic cones) as fast as you can in a parking lot or air strip. There’s a national organization that runs these amateur auto racing events – the Sports Car Club or America (SCCA). In 2001, I bought a Trans Am and started racing to have fun and to meet people. While autocrossing in 2004, I met Jason and we married two years later. In 2006, I was offered the opportunity to join the GM Performance Division sponsored Autocross Team. . In 2007, I got the opportunity to race a turbocharged Solstice GXP with the GM Team. At Nationals that year, I was able to bring home our first and only National Championship! I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would belong to a GM sponsored race team and, on top of that, win a National Championship! On February 6, 2009, I was involved in a bad car crash on the GM Milford Proving Grounds. I was air-lifted to UofM Ann Arbor Hospital and was in a coma for 4 days with a Traumatic Brain Injury. Recovery from a TBI has been daunting, frustrating, and tough. I still don’t feel like my former self, but I’m happy with who I am today. Thankfully, post-TBI we were still able to have children – Stella & Calvin. They are 2 years apart and are super fun! We downhill ski and race go-karts as a family. They keep us busy, and we love it!
