Carol's Story
Life
OK- I've started this about 8 times so far- I'm going to jump in with biographical facts-I left Fort Madison in 1963 to join the USAF. I studied to be X-Ray technician & was stationed at Otis AFB on Cape Cod,MA. I met my husband there- we've been married 44 years- we have one son, Dominic, who lives in Farifax,VA with his wife & 2 sons. We've lived in Buffalo,NY; North Haven,CT & now are in the Albany,NY area. I was a teacher's assistant for 20 years, working with children with autism, CP_ & various learning & behavioral problems. I retired 5 years ago & am loving my retirement. I enjoy golfing , bird watching, and I am still an avid reader. My memories of home are of my mother telling me to put that book down & go outside & playâÂÂ! I also have been involved in genealogy for over 30 years. I love learning about ancestors & I think my oldest grandson has the genealogy bug too. He's fascinated by an ancestor who was supposed to be a privateer (pirate to him) so I have to keep coming up with more good stories. My husband Tom worked for various eastern railroads (New York Central, Penn Central, Conrail & finally CSX) and retired after 42 years on the engineâÂÂand glad to get out alive! oth are golfers â just not together!- but we are still able to find lots of laughs together. I used to come home to FM every year, but since my mother died in 1997, I have only been back one time. My beloved little sister, Mary Jo, died in her sleep in Oct of 2006, so I was back for the first time in 9 years. I would like to retire in Fort Madison because to me, that's still home! All in all, I have mostly good memories of Aquinas- especially my friends and teachers. I have wonderful memories of Sacred Heart School- several years ago (before they knocked it down) Father Amborn let my good friend, Mary Ann Nagel & myself into the school. Armed with a video camera,we were able to capture our memories on tape-we weren't too profane or irreverent.
I do look back on my childhood in FM & realize how insular our family was. I wish I had taken the opportunity to be kinder and to think outside the box ! Anyway, here I am today, 65 years old & all I can think is -- How the hell did the time pass so quicklyâÂÂ? Hopefully, I'll use my remaining time wisely. I wish all my old classmates & friends the best of everything- isn't it funny how HEALTH is usually #1 on our hit parade at this age.
