Carol's Story
Carol is from Portland, Indiana. She has been married to Frederick Shears since 1977. Her schools include Portland High School, Portland Junior High School, Judge Haynes Elementary School. She later attended Ball State University, where she earned both her bachelor's degree and a double masters degree. She is an assistant professor of synoptic geography at Ball State University, where she is the coordinator of physical geography laboratory experiences. Carol is a certified storm spotter; is a member of the graduate faculty and the education faculty at BSU.
Carol is a two time cancer survivor, who also suffered a spinal cord injury which required two years of therapy for her to learn to walk again. She returned to teaching at Ball State in Fall Semester of 2012, teaching from a wheelchair for a year. She continues to teach -- now walking and enjoying life.

Carol and Fred (David) have two adult sons, Dr. Andrew Shears, a professor of Geography at Mansfield University, Pennsylvania, and Timothy Shears, merchandiser/manager for Anheuser Busch and a recent college graduate and dad. Andrew & Amy have Carol's 5 grand dogs; Tim and Amanda are the parents of Carol's granddaughter, a first grade student at Burris Laboratory School, Ball State University. She is perfect is every way! :)
The Shears family is active at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Muncie, where they sing in the Praise Band and the Senior Choir. They also have 2 "carpeted kids" (dachshunds) Bud (Budweiser -red shorthaired) and Bo (Boloney - black and tan long haired). They still enjoy traveling -- taking a trip by Amtrak to San Francisco (with Carol in a wheelchair), Florida over spring break 2013, and trips to Pennsylvania as often as they can.
