Carol's Story

Serendipity has been a theme in my life. I went off to Regis College in the Boston area with no specific career goal. For an extra $100 I added a teaching certificate to my liberal arts history degree. I was so surprised to discover how at home I was in the classroom and that I loved teaching. As I graduated I also discovered my soulmate, in love and laughter, Hugh Gallagher, Hugh also eventually entered the education field. We embraced the same vision of making the "World a better place one student at a time." He also shared the frustration and disappointment in the institution of education. We constantly ran into political, economic and social walls, always working to break them down. Thank God for those uplifting classroom moments. Our best accomplishments were Katie, Jenny and Elizabeth. What joy and presence they brought to our life. Okay maybe a little drama;) Hugh and I gave 35 years to education. But of course I flunked retirement and at the age of 60 I found myself unexpectedly working part time in the field of aging. bers of this community were inspiring. The best part was they called me "The Kid" on campus! Sadly, I lost hugh to pancreatic cancer after 40 years of marriage. Our daughters organized team hugs with T-shirts for family and caregivers. They even picked out a fight song. Can you tell they are the children of teachers? We were so disappointed that we could not will Hugh into cancer remission. But joyfully my youngest daughter Elizabeth was able to plan her wedding within three months so Hugh could walk her down the aisle and dance that most important dance. What A wonderful memory we made with family and friends! Now my daughter and her husband live in our family home and I am adjusting to condominium life in Lower Falls, Milton. I have made a lovely, healing nest for myself looking out over the Neponset river. Living with myself, I now realize I am high maintenance.! Who knew? Never underestimate the quality of life with a good partner.(: Two heads are always better then one. So I am blessed with loving, fun daughters and two wonderous grandchildren. Of course I am on the look out for my next serendipitous life purpose as I adjust to my new normal. Stay tuned...
