Carolyn's Story

Life I am a native, born in Commerce, Tx. I have lived in the Dallas/Garland area all my life. After graduation in 1965, I worked for a collection agency, a drapery hardware and trim company, a large bank and finally an average sized oil company where I continued to work for a total of 34 yrs. While working there I went to College and obtained my BA Degree in Accounting. I supervised for over ten years before earning my degree. During the last years of my working career my company went through a lot of transition and company buy outs. Half of the company moved to Houston and the other half was bought out by another new oil company. I chose to stay with the new oil company because they had agreed to continue my senority, benefits, salary and years of service. This enabled me to retire early at age 55, Nov 15, 2001. After retirement I did some part time work for a tax service during the Jan-Apr tax season of 2002. Now, I pretty much just do what I want to around the house and garden. I have been spending a lot of time researching our family genealogies. As far as my personal life I married the first time in 1966 to a high school boyfriend and we divorced in 1969. I remarried in Dec 1969 to my current husband, Raymond and we have been married for 35 years. We raised his daughter from his first marriage since she was five yrs old and we had one daughter together who died at 14 mos of spinal menigitus. We have one grandson who is going to turn 17 on Oct. 8. He plays football on Varsity for North Mesquite High School. Our grown daughter is a police officer for Richardson Police Dept. She spent about 5 years in the Narcotics Undercover Division. I love handcrafts, quilting, gardening, reading, going to movies, and traveling. I like mystery novels and mystery computer games. We lived in Garland for 29 years while we raised our family and worked. My husband also retired after 34 yrs with his company and we moved from Garland to the Cedar Creek Area. It is about 65 miles southeast of Dallas. We have a beautiful place, 15 acres about 1 mile from the lake. We have lots of trees and a couple of natural wooded areas on the property. We are busy working around the place, making flower beds and planting. Last year we build a big two level deck on the back of our home. Next summer we are going to build a pond for fishing. We have had two wonderful years here and are just loving it. We had a wonderful vegatable garden and enjoyed tomatoes, squash, okra and cantelopes and watermelons from the garden. We have been through our share of difficulties in the last couple of years too. We lost my husband's mother and my dad in 2001. My husband's had surgery on his shoulder (rotator cuff) and I am a colon cancer survivor and am still taking chemo. We had a serious auto accident in 2003 in Arkansas as we were returning from Thanksgiving with the husband's family there. I had a crushed right heel and had to have surgery on it. I am still recovering but I am doing great. We are both grateful to be here and still enjoying our retirement in this beautiful place. Next year we hope to do a little more traveling, maybe even take a cruise. UPDATE: 7/27/05 Things are going great. I am still cancer free and doing wonderfully. Life is good. Just went to my 40th year High School Reunion last Sat night. It was a blast from the past! Enjoyed seeing and visiting with folks that I have known and went to school with even longer than 40 yrs. Some I knew in Elementary school. It was great to see everyone again. Thanks to all the dedicated persons that put it all together. Great food, great fun, great friends! And truly great music. They don't make music like that anymore. Can only here it now on the oldies stations and my husband's collection. We had a bountiful garden this year and gave lots of veggies away to friends and family. Our health is good and we are taking care of ourselv...Expand for more
es. We are enjoying retirement. School I generally always loved school. I made good grades, mostly A's and B's althrough I did make a few C's and even a D once in High School English. Man, Miss Starr was hard!I loved being in Future Homemakers Club, Spanish Club and playing on the girls Volleyball team. I had a few best friends and we did everything together. Going to football games, movies, birthday parties, dances, slumber parties and writing and sharing notes about our boyfriends! I have stayed in contact with only a couple of them over the years and attended all my high school reunions. Boy, is that fun to see how all those other people have aged!!! Quick, hide the mirrows! Overall, I would say that my experiences with school were good ones, fun and memorable. College I attended Amber University in Garland. My Major was Accounting. Since it was a college for adults there were no traditional college extras, just lots of work, taking notes, research, papers to write all while working full time. Almost every hour that I wasn't at work I was at school, either in class or in the library. I don't recommend this method of getting your degree to a young person ready to go to college or work but it certainly can be done if you are willing to sacrifice all of your personal life to do it. I never would have made it without a very understanding husband and one who was willing to do all the housework, laundry and keep the house running while I worked and went to school. It was a very long five years. My favorite subject was Humanity. I loved going to plays and concerts. It was great. Loved my teacher. She was a joy. Worst subject was Statistics. Ugh! Hated that. It was a thrill to finally graduate in 1991 and have all my family there to support me. Workplace I starting working for a collections agency right after I graduated. I did light typing there and worked with three men in the office. I didn't like the environment and the office closed up one day leaving me owed money for the last week's work there. Never got it either! The next job was at Conso Products. It was a warehouse for Drapery products, hardware and trims. Our customers were decorators doing work for their clients. Also retail stores that sold the products. I took orders, process them, dealt with clients in the showroom. Worked there about a year. The next job was at Republic National Bank in the transit dept. I typed advices for sending checks that cleared the bank back to smaller banks and charged them a fee based on the amount of the check. Typed all day long. Worked there about a year and a half. Next job was in Austin, TX. My first husband, John was going to school there for Texas Instruments. I went to work for Beall Department Stores. I did work in the office, keeping the inventory books, ordering merchandise, taking layaway payments, gift wrapping. Worked there about 11 months. Moved back to Dallas when husband finished his schooling. Oddest thing there was when I went to work there, my name was Carolyn Thompson and the person I was replacing was also named Carolyn Thompson. Her husband has just been transferred to Dallas. Weird!!! After moving back to Dallas, I went to work for Fina Oil and Chemical Company. In the beginning they were called American Petrofina Oil Company. Over the years, the Company went through many merges, buyouts and such so it changed several times. It was called Total when the French company bought it out. Then the company split off the Marketing and Chemical Divisions and I stayed with the Marketing part and it became Alon USA. The Chemical part moved to Houston and operates under Total now. I did a lot of things over my 34 yrs. I worked in the Accounts Receivable for many years and was the Supervisor there for 10 yrs. After getting my accounting degree, I transferred to the Accounting Dept and worked there until retirement.

Happy pet day to all my friends with pets! Here’s our two. Samantha (calico cat) and Susie (dog). They both are rotten.
It’s rainy and cold this morning and I have to work on taxes. Oh well not weather I want to get out in anyway! And just when we were having such beautiful warm weather to plant some pretty flowers too! Looks like we will
We were at the Victorian Lady Tearoom for lunch recently and a woman came over and wanted to take a picture of holding hands. Wish Raymond had been smiling a little more.

Happy Mother’s Day is coming! This is an older picture of my mom, Bonnie Ruth Monk Mitchell. She was always a beautiful woman. Still miss her. I lost her in 2914 to pancreatic cancer.
My brother, Wes Horton was here for the weekend and we made a trip to mom’s grave to place some flowers for Mothers’s Day.
Happiness is holding your new great granddaughter!
