Carol's Story

Life After graduating with the last class at Seaboard High School, before the county high schools were consolidated, I attended Chowan College for two years, finishing with a secretarial diploma. I worked a few jobs and was married briefly in 1968 then was divorced. In 1970, I married John Hartline who was a 1st Lieutenant and a fixed-wing pilot in the US Army. After our marriage he transitioned into helicopters and we were sent to Mannheim, Germany where he served about two and a half years. While there, I traveled a bit and was active in military wives' activities. In 1973, we returned to the States and he left the Army. We settled in Northern Virgina, living first in Centreville, then in Springfield. John worked as a Sears service tech then took night classes to become a computer programmer. Our son, David Eric, was born in 1977 and later that year John was hired by what is now CareFirst BC-BS. We later moved to Annandale and finally to Woodbridge where we bought a house. In 1985 my mother died, leaving us the family home in Seaboard. We decided to sell our home in Woodbridge and David and I moved to Seaboard. John continued his employment in DC and stayed with his parents in Springfield during the week. His mother became ill and passed away and his father sold the home so John resided with his sister in Woodbridge for a time. In 1994, when David was a senior at Northampton East, I returned to Chowan College, which had recently become a four-year college. I pursued and earned a degree in studio art. While there I participated in community chorus. One of my favorite classes there was an elective class in photography. One of the highlights of my time at Chowan was a chance to visit New York City with the art department on two different occasions. The first trip, I was with two good friends and the daughter of one of them. On the second trip, my son, David, went with us. Then David and I took one of those fast tours of Europe, a trip which was also sponsored by the department. I earned my degree in 1997. The following year I enrolled in graphic design classes at Halifax Community College and earned an associate degree in 1999. I was hired by the Roanoke Rapids Daily Herald as an assistant photographer and photo editor. I worked for them for almost three years and left for a variety of reasons. Since that time, I have been pursuing a variety of interests and trying to complete a novel I have been working on for years. David earned a degree in mathematics at Chowan in 1999. After taking some computer courses at HCC and at Computer Learning in Viginia, he was hired at CareFirst for a temporary job which turned into a full-time position and was there for a few years. He and John shared an apartment in Woodbridge and traveled home almost every weekend. In 2004, I was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer. I had a lumpectomy followed by chemotherapy and radiation. Since then, I have been at home. My husband took early retirement in 2006 and found himself going nuts here at home. He was hired by COMSYS and was placed in a contract position at Centura's office in Rocky ...Expand for more
Mount. When that position ended, they placed him back with CareFirst. He is doing pretty much the same job he did for years. David tired of the rat race in DC and came back home to live. He had been working on a Sci-Fi book. When he finished it, he had it published doing one of those self-publish deals. The name of the book is "Galactic Liberty." Unfortunately, the company that published it didn't do a great job of promotion. They went out of business a while after that. Since moving to Seaboard in 1986, we have been trying to remodel my family home. Last year we had the roof completely redone and had siding put on the outside. Last fall, we had a new garage built. We are hoping to be able to eventually remodel the inside of the house and add on at the back. In October of last year, John and I took a trip to Denver, California and Oregon. Update: 6/13/2014 Since I posted the above summary, there have not been many changes. My husband still works in DC four days a week. David is at home, seeking work in the surrounding area. Since returning home, after working about seven years, he has been studying online and has earned his master's degree in Computer Science and an associate in Accounting. He is currently studying Computer Programming. In the meantime, he has written and published a book titled, Galactic Liberty. It is available through Tate Publishing Company online or by contacting David directly. He has written a sequel and is working on a third. However, he hasn't had the second book published yet. In addition, I keep him busy running errands for me and helping look after our small menagerie. --Snowflake, our demanding cat and Dusty and Shadow, our beautiful Sheltie boys! Update: 10/22/1023 I thought it was time to bring things up to date. John gave up his apartment a few years ago. He was still coming home to Seaboard on weekends, so he boarded with his sister while he commuted from her condo in Woodbridge to Reston, VA, where their computer department is now located. In 2020, when the pandemic hit us, John's company put their employees on work from home status. I had a recurrence of BC that year and had to have surgery and treatments. John has been continued to work from home since the virus died down. He doesn't miss those long commutes on the weekends. David completed in Computer Programming classes he was taking and since then has acquired some clients for whom he works as webmaster on their websites. He continues to help out a lot at home. He drives me to my medical appointments. We lost our cat, Snowflake a while back and also lost our dog, Shadow. We acquired a new cat, Ashe, a few months after Snowflake passed. We still have Dusty. He really enjoys having John at home as he gets to hang out with him, and they take a walk almost every afternoon. Although I have had some anomalies show up since 2020, they have proved to be benign. This past year, I have had some procedures done so in was in and out of doctor's offices quite frequently. It hasn't been a lot of fun, but I'm doing pretty well now. John and I celebrated 53 years of marriage on August 8.
