Carolyn's Story
Life
After graduation I attended KC Junior College and finished with an AA. I was 17 when we graduated and my parents wouldn't allow my going away. In the fall of 1962 I went to the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. I remain a Golden Gopher today. In 1965 I moved to Chicago and began teaching French to high school students in the Chicago Public Schools. In 1972 I received my Masters degree in Teaching from the University of Chicago. In 1978 I became a Master Teacher in a classical elementary school. But, it was evident that public education was not being supported in the city and I made a move to learn banking. I became a bank manager at South Shore Bank and stayed until 1988, when I was attractefd to the Bank of New England in Boston. I served as the Affirmative Action Officer until Fleet Bank took over ...Expand for more
and I moved to the Hartford, CT area. I was a human resources manager and then the Ombudsman for Diversity for the corporation. Chicago lured me to take the position of Diversit Director for LaSalle Bank Corporation, a subsidiary of ABN AMRO, a Dutch bank. That experience was great, as I was able to travel to Holland and to Brazil. Through all of this I had a short-lived marriage, my mom lived with me for several years until her death at the ripe age of 93, and now I am retired from the bank and living and consulting in Providence, Rhode Island. My minor in Spanish has come in quite handy here, as the population of Providence is 66% Spanish-speaking. Portuguese and Italian are also spoken here. I remain a loyal Bears, Bulls, Cubs and White Sox fan, but I always cheer for the Chiefs and sometimes the Vikings.
