More about Carolyn:"Mark is a retired Sergeant of the Colorado State Patrol, who was born in California and grew up in Colorado. He served in the USAF for 8 years before joining the State Patrol. In December 1998 Mark Retired from the Colorado State Patrol as a result of an injury he received in the line of duty. Mark has worked in a variety of positions related to Criminal Justice through local State and Federal departments. Mark currently works for AT&T Mobility as a Quality Area Manager in Joplin MO. He has spent a lifetime in service to others and continues to do so through the music of his flute. Mark, while not of Native American decent, has always felt a connection with nature, the creator, and the indigenous people of this country. In 2005 while at a Pow-Wow his wife became enthralled with the sounds of the Native American Flute. She purchased a flute as a Gift for Mark. Upon trying it he soon knew that the Flute was the instrument he had been searching for. Since then, Mark has found great success performing at numerous events through sharing the Native American Flute’s history and music. In addition to the Native American style Flute Mark also plays the Reverie Harp, Wavedrum, Psaltery, Little Minstrel, Wings and Silhouettes, and a host of other percussion instruments. His Wife Carolyn, (Whose Great Grandmother was Chickasaw), plays crystal and Tibetan singing bowls. Mark was the former coordinator of the Cascade Flute Circle and current coordinator of the Kokopelli Tri-State Flute circle in Joplin Missouri. These flute circles sit in a circle to symbolize, that, while everyone is different, we are all equals. The environment is one of love and acceptance of all skill levels. Mark’s philosophy is that not only should we share our hearts through the flute with each other, we should learn from each other. He bares his heart and soul in his music through the Native Flute. For this reason the “Bare Heart Flute” was created for Mark by his friend, Jeff Calavan, of the Oregon Flute Store and will be featured on this website and all his upcoming albums. In 2006, Mark was involved with helping to make the first annual Pacific Northwest Flute Quest a success. Again in 2007 Mark sat on the Flute Quest committee until his work took him to another state. Flute Quest is one of the largest Native American Flute Events in the nation, boasting headliner performers every year. Mark Studied theology and religion at Union and Pacific Union College and currently is a two time ordained minister with an Honorary Doctorate of Theology. Mark studied at numerous other colleges including Weber State University, University of Maryland, City Colleges of Chicago, and Western Valley University. Mark holds a Doctorate in Criminal Justice and an MBA in Customer Relations. Mark graduated as a Certified Native American style Flute Instructor from the Seven Directions Program in early 2007. He now instructs at flute workshops and provides flute lessons in the Joplin MO Tri-State area. Mark is often a guest speaker and performer at colleges, universities, and cultural events around the nation. ed in the Austrian Alps, and broke the sound barrier in an F-16 fighter jet, yet Mark continues to remain grounded in his connection to mankind through the Native American Flute and culture. Mark embraces and enjoys the diversity of all cultures and peoples. Mark is a national recording artist with multiple NAMMY, (Native American Music Award) and ISMA , (Indian Summer Music Award) nominations. Mark recorded his first CD, entitled “Woodsounds” with Jan Michael Lookingwolf which was released in April of 2007. The CD is a well-thought out solo flute recording with melodies that are memorable and heart warming. His second album released in August that year was a tribute to the Trail of Tears and has met with great success. Kokopelli tears is a beautifully themed album that commemorates hardships suffered along the Trail of Tears. A portion of the proceeds from this album is donated to help the education of Native American children. Mark's third CD was released December 3rd 2011, on Mark & Carol's 33rd Anniversary. This third CD, Reflections of Calvary, is a sacred CD that is both traditional and contemporary with thoughtful contemplation on the greatest event in history. An event that both divided history while reconciling heaven and earth, creature with creator. The CD has a 12 page fold out written by Mark that uniquely reflects on meaningful snapshots of this event. This CD is filled with marvelous surprises for the buyer/owner of the CD. Reflections of Calvary can be said to be Marks best album to date. In this CD the Native American Flute is married with many different musical instruments throughout in traditional and innovative ways that is sure to please the listener. Owners of this CD will treasure both its music and its spiritual unique insight. It will touch your heart and move your soul. “Mark’s style of playing is pure, refined, and original. His melodies capture the heart and beautiful spirit of the native flute. He is well on the way to being one of the premier flute players of our times...” ~Jan Michael Looking Wolf (2006) Mark’s journey with the Native American style flute has been one of joy, healing, blessing, sharing, acceptance, love, and unity through diversity, hope, peace and one heart for all mankind. Yet, Mark’s journey has only just begun. His desire is to continue helping others learn the flute through numerous venues. Mark continues as a volunteer in his community and communities across the nation, and currently works to bring the healing of music to all in need through the use of the Native American style Flute and numerous other intuitive instruments. Mark is a Christian first and foremost who believes Jesus Christ, our Creator, Lord, Savior and Recreator of our hearts died on Calvary for the salvation of all mankind. It is his belief, that in a world of hate and violence it is only a love that is true, unprejudiced, unbiased, unjudgmental, and all accepting that can prevail. True love is the salve that humanity must apply to heal all wounds. This love is represented in the body of each flute circle. All are equal, all are accepted, and all are loved. The Tri-State Flute Circle is inclusive of all race, color, creed, religion, culture, backgrounds and interests. As one heart we become stronger as we embrace the heart of all mankind’s diversities. Mark believes that our Creator and Lord Jesus Christ has put a song in everyone’s heart. It is his belief that song is meant for praise to the creator. Many have not experienced the joy that music can bring in one’s life. It is Mark’s desire that everyone experience the joy of playing music. Mark’s mission in life is twofold, to spread the love of the Creator to all he encounters and to give the gift of music to all who may not have enjoyed that experience. There are a lot of people that Mark is very grateful to who have helped with his music. First and foremost is his wife, loyal companion, and best friend for over 33 years, Carolyn Barger. Without her none of this would be possible. Much gratitude goes out to all those who helped him get started in the flute playing business, Jan Michael Looking Wolf, Wil Holmes, Brent Haines, Clint Goss, Mary Youngblood, Peter Phippen, Mark Holland, and Scott August. Mark also has continued gratitude for all those who have supported him and his flute playing over the past six years such as Perry Rushton, Rick Barney, Tom Duke and those supportive members of the Cascade, Good Medicine, Bentonville and Tri-State Flute Circles. Above alll, Mark has the greatest gratitude First and Last, Alpha and Omega, to his Creator, Lord, Savior and Re-Creator Jesus Christ who has been the Author and Finisher of his Music and Faith. A Word from Mark There is no greater calling than to make a difference in someone’s life. Be it great or small, the interactions we have each day with one another on life’s marvelous journey hold great potential for sparking joy, love and compassion throughout humanity. We are all connected by the Creator’s great heart-beat that pulses through each of us. It is our responsibility and privilage to share it a little every day through our words, our music, and our deeds so that all mankind will be richly blessed. I wish you all my love In Song Mark 'Wandering Bear' Barger".
