Carolyn's Story
I married George Otto in December 1965 and graduated from Lamar in May 1966 with a degree in Elementary Education. George was commissioned a 2nd Lt.in the Marine Corps and was sent to flight school in Pensacola,FL.where he got his Naval Aviators wings.I taught first grade at Ensley Elementary in Pensacola while he was in flight school. I moved back to Beaumont while George was flying helicopters in Vietnam.
Upon his return, we moved back to Pensacola where George was a flight insturctor.
Our son, Mark, was born in Pensacola in 1969. Mark graduated from high school while we were iliving in Jacksonville, Florida and was appointed to West Point (United States Military Academy). He has his Masters from the University of Florida and after living in Gainesville, Fl for 20 years he now has a new job and is in Auburn, AL. He got married in January 2009 and he and his wife Diane now have a boy named George who is 8, a little girl named Emma who was born in July 2015 and a baby boy named Ari who was born April 2017.
Now that George and I are both retired, we are enjoying our hillside home, being close to our Texas family again and traveling.
School
I started school in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Then we moved to Chillocothe,Missouri for second grade and half of third grade.
Our next move was to Kirkwood, Missouri (St. Louis) where we lived until I was in the 8th grade.I attended Keysor Elementary and Nipher Junior High.
Then we moved to Beaumont, Texas where I went to Amelia Junior High and then on to Beaumont High. At Beaumont High, I was editor of the BHS News for two years (the first junior to ever have that job).

irst grade. George was in the Marine Corps in flight school and when he got his wings, we moved to North Carolina until he went to Vietnam.
While George was in Vietnam, I moved back to Beaumont where I substituted in some of the same schools I had attended. That was just for the year 1968.
When George returned from Vietnam, we moved back to Pensacola where George was now an instructor in the Marine Corps flight school. I did not teach this time. I became a full time mom when our son, Mark, was born in December 1969.
George left the Marine Corps in 1970 and we moved to Houston, Texas where he worked for Prudential Insurance in the home office there. I was still a stay at home mom, but started working in our church's Mother's Day Out program 2 days a week. I ended up becoming Director of the Mother's Day Out and teaching in the church's 3 day a week pre-school.
When Mark started kindergarten, I started substituting in the public schools again. In February of that year, I was offered a full time job teaching 3rd grade at E.A. Jones Elementary in Missouri City. I taught there from 1977 until I transfered to the new school being built in Quail Valley...Lantern Lane. I taught 3rd grade there until we left Houston in 1984.
Prudential transfered George to Jacksonville, FL in 1984 I taught at Loretto Elementary School in Mandarin. I again was teaching 3rd grade. I stayed there until my retirement in June 2002.
When George retired from Prudential in 2002, we moved to Texas where we built a beautiful little home on a hill in the heart of the Texas Hill Country. We are content and love it here. George is very active in Civil Air Patrol and I am active in Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary teaching organization.
