Carrie's Story

Life My sister and I were the first twins born in Warwick Rhode Island in 1975, and we were in the newspaper on the day we were born. We had a mostly normal childhood, and we had the great experience of growing up with another set of twins...two identical twin boys named Shawn and Scott. Our mothers met when we were just months old, while they were walking us in our strollers. My mother also babysat a boy named Cory, who was like a brother to us. After age 9 and my sister, mom and I moved to Massachusetts after our grandfather died and our parents divorced, and we lost touch with many childhood friends. I spent a few years of my life in Massachusetts very sick with bronchial asthma. I was out of school a lot and didn't get much chance to make friends. I was put on medication that almost killed me, until my mother decided to take me off it. For a long time, she was afraid I was going to die, but I got better thanks to her. I was homeschooled for a while to catch up with everyone else my age. After graduating from Melrose High school in Melrose MA in 1993, I moved to Durham NH and attended UNH for both undergraduate and graduate education. I graduated in 1997 with a BA in Psychology, and left the UNH Counseling program in 1999. I decided to change careers and got a job in the technical field. I work as a Broadcasting Services Coordinator in South Boston. Along with that, I also have my own online business selling natural bodycare products that I make myself. The store is called Starfire's Creations and is doing quite well for a small internet store. Dealing with illness has helped me re-focus my life on health and natural care for the body, and the store gives me a great chance to share what I've learned and create special products for my customers using plant ingredients. I married my friend Jeffrey Jacques, another computer geek, on August 10th 2002, on a boat in Portland ME in a quick and very improvised wedding and reception (3 hours total from ceremony to the end of the reception :) ). We had met online in 2001. We lived in Nashua NH for 3 years. In 2005 we moved into our first home in Londonderry which we went through hell and back to purchase! Jeff is a wonderful husband, and a great cook :) . He works as a QA Engineer at a small company in Nashua NH. I spend 20 hours per week commuting by train to my job, which leaves me very little time outside of work and when I'm not filling orders placed at my online store. But when I do have the time, I like to relax since I hardly ever get to otherwise. I love to go sailing on my father's boat in Rhode Island. I love to write, I have a few blogs and journals online, and publish stories from time to time. I like to go to Portland ME or Portsmouth NH and shop and enjoy the beaches and scenery. I take a lot of photos of my family and friends with my digital camera and spend a lot of time making scrapbooks. I take online courses on herbology and aromatherapy, and participate in online discussion groups on those topics as well as crafts in general. I try to get the most out of life. I am unable to have children of my own so I don't have any, but I'd like to adopt someday. There are some beautiful little girls in my life that make me the happiest aunt in the world. I have an adorable 10 year old niece named Stephanie (after my aunt who died in 1995), a 3 year old niece named Abigail (aka Abby), and a 2 year old niece named Emma! There is never a dull moment with them, and I love them with all my heart :) . Family is very important to me, and I try to spend as much time as possible with them. I love to remember the old days with classmates, old flames, and friends, and there are some people I often wonder about and would really like to find and know how they are doing. Please get in touch with me if you want to chat! My AOL IM handle is fireheart1975 School I attended Catholic school in Warwick Rhode Island and there was a time when I wanted to be a nun. Sister Carrie Ellen. But I changed my mind quickly, as the teachers were very strict and there wasn't much that we were allowed to do, including listen to rock music. And I loved music! I didn't realize what a sheltered life I was living until my family and I moved to Massachusetts when I was 9. Until then, I thought it was normal for priests to stand in front of the deli and bless people as ...Expand for more
they walked through the door! In Warwick you could get all your errands done, and have an exorcism and a sandwich at the same time! people still don't believe that I used to eat Pizza without the cheese. Apparently cheese was evil....but it was a damn good pizza! I remember having a very tough time in high school. I liked to rebel and get peoples' attention by wearing strange clothes (balloon skirts, converse sneakers and purple hair???? :) ) and not being interested in the popular activities. My favorite subjects were Art, Creative Writing, and Latin, and I was a member of the Art Club, S.A.D.D, and the Latin Club. I was teased a lot, and had a lot of lovely nicknames. I had very few friends, but the close friends I had then are still my friends today, including my high school sweetheart Patrick, so I must have done something right. I can't say I have many fond memories of high school, except maybe passing daily notes with my friend Lisa. Lisa and I had a secret alphabet that we would use to write each other letters no one else could read. The letters were very elaborate and included drawings and poems...I still have them! :) The funny thing is...I can't read them anymore! Meeting my high school sweetheart Patrick during my Junior year was the highlight of those days....we went to separate high schools, and one my favorite memories is trying to sneak him into school with me by saying he was my cousin visiting from out of state :) . Patrick and I went to three proms together (my junior prom and both of our senior proms) and we are still close friends. He's like the brother I never had. I have a lot of regrets in my life, and as soon as a time machine has been invented, I would gladly stand in line with my bags packed. However, one thing I would never do over in my life is HIGH SCHOOL! Screw that! :) I'm sure may of you feel the same way.... College I loved my 6 years at UNH, and wouldn't trade them for anything even though I ended up not becoming a psychologist. My Grandfather Joseph D. Batcheller was an English and Theater professor at UNH for 43 years and taught until the day he died. The Batcheller House (which now houses the "President's Commission on the Status of Women") on campus was named after him, he used to live there with my Grandmother and father a long time ago. I didn't know him very well, but when I attended his memorial service at Paul Creative Arts Center in 1987, it was obvious that he was an inspiration to a lot of people, as well as helped make the theater program at UNH so outstanding. I wanted to follow in his and my father's footsteps and attend the university. I was one of the first women in my family to go to college. Before I came to UNH, I applied to be in the special interest dorm "S.E.L.F." (Students Electing to Live Free from drugs and alcohol), Engelhardt Hall. I was in a "forced triple" there as my first roommate experience as a Freshman. My family referred to my roommates as "the wicked stepsisters" because they weren't very easy to get along with and seemed to lack basic social skills - you'd walk into the room and say hi and would get NO RESPONSE. Luckily I earned some seniority in the hall after two years, and managed to get a single room. Living at Engelhardt Hall was a great experience, there were many nice people there and I remember them fondly. I was heavily involved in on-campus organizations - the Psychology Club, Cool-Aid (I was President of the crisis center when I was a Junior), S.H.A.R.P.P., Peer Education, HIV Counseling through Health Services, and Freshman activities during the summer. My classes were great, and I couldn't have asked for better teachers. That's why after 4 years I decided to also do my graduate study at UNH. I was one of the youngest people to be accepted into the Counseling program. I spent two years studying in the program, but decided to switch my career focus to the computer field, and withdrew from the Counseling program in 1999. I really miss some people who were great friends to me during my college days...particularly Shawn Currey, Roger Cook, Chris House, Amy Pennington, Ryan Lovell, Eric Swanson, my Freshman roommate Nicole Sicard, my Sophmore roommate Jean, and Seth Davis to name a few. I hope they are all doing well and that great things are happening for them. I would really love to hear from them sometime.
