Cassandra's Story
A hundred and fifty years ago (when I was much, much younger and better looking) I was employed by a speaker manufacturer, testing speakers for quality.
A hundred years ago I used to make hinges. (Yeah. I know!) I didn't realize that I was hired for the Christmas Season. I was YOUNG. I had my own apartment outside the City. My car was a gun-metal grey '68 Chevy Malibu Classic. (I LOVED that car!!) Then they layed me off. Right at Christmas. "Merry Christmas, here's your free turkey and your pink slip." THAT was not a good Holiday for me.
But I guess the weirdest (??) job I ever had was working for Big Sky Balloons outside Chicago about 30 miles. Sewing. (Of course!) Mending. I referred to it as 'chewing balloons'. Not sure why now. Weird job but I loved it! I was NOT looking for a job at that point, understand. I was just going through the want ads and there it was: SEAMSTRESS and BIG SKY BALLOONS. I have always known how to sew. But that Little Kid that lives inside of me said: WHOA!! BALLOONS!!! And so I went ov...Expand for more
er 'just to see'. I was stunned they wanted to hire me, really.
I guess sewing isn't something that's done on a regular basis any longer. More's the pity. So, whenever I'm out and about and I see a Grand Opening or a huge sale for something and they have a big 20/30/40 foot balloon (purple gorilla, birthday cake, a rat [for ANY Union]or just a plain old hot-air looking balloon) with banners hung on them I think of that time. And it makes me laugh.
I sew, ok? I just didn't think about trying to make any money at it. I have made clothes for myself and others. I've made curtains AND drapes. Purses. Canvas tote bags. I took apart an old pair of mocs I bought at KINNEYS in the early 70's (employed at that time by 20th Century-Fox) (I was a receptionist. Get over it.) and somewhere in the 90s I finally wore a hole in the toe (cement is NO GOOD for house slippers) so I went and bought some lovely butter-colored leather, took my old ones apart and used the remains as a template to make new ones.
They fit just fine, thank you.
