Catherine's Story

Update - I have created a Facebook Group for all Lasalle Alumni to gather and share stories etc. Lasalle Secondary 1970's Alumni is the Group name. Look it up. I will add you! Life I've been on the move since my birth in Cornerbrook Newfloundland, my father's first place of employment after graduating Civil Engineering from U of Sask. I have run out of fingers and toes to count the places I've lived due to my father's and subsequently my x husband's promotability and transferability. Suffice it to say I've been around. I have my degree in business admin in management, another in library management and am often found among students, upgrading. For those of you who knew me, or thought you did during my teen years... I'd love to hear from you. With all the moving, I scarcely had time to make friends before another move so those I did make remain in my heart and memory. I cope easily with change, thrive on experience, love birds, berries and all things natural. I've spent a few years in Yellowknife so dog sledding was a must, with our own small team and all the muck that goes with it I tested my limits. My two beautiful children are grown, my daughter at 32 is out in the world and successful in Logistics and Warehouse Management and my son is 29 graduated university in Electrical Engineering. Well I'd love to touch base with anyone who remembers me. I was always the new kid so it was a sea of new faces for me. I never meant to not keep in touch, I simply had to adapt and move on. Cathy School My biggest crush.. that's a bit of a joke because truth be told I was not truly "interested" in boys/men until I was 34. I think I was caught up in running the other way and really didn't stop and look around until then. I did however have a long term boyfriend with whom I lost my way for a while. Heatherbrae - Rexdale, Toronto Mrs. Profit was the teacher who inspired me the most, without a doubt. She was my grade 7 science teacher. Anyone who was in her classes at Heatherbrae will definitely remember her. She was stern, older, beautiful in her way, sooo very intelligent, kind, strict, and above all concerned with both our safety and well being as well as our academic success. Those of you who were in her class the year I was will remember her discovering that we in fact did not have a grasp on grammar. She kept us in after school every day for a few weeks or was it months? She drilled us until we had it down pat. She is one teacher I will never ever forget for her dedication and love of teaching. She allowed me to go through an entire speech on aphids, if you can imagine, and then firmly said "Catherine I am sure that was very interesting but we didn't hear a word, would you please do it again, but this time project your voice, speak up!" I was painfully shy, as I have said, always the new kid so this was so...Expand for more
very hard for me. But you know what, she proved to me that I had something to say. I loved her. She was a safe firm place in my education. Would I do it all again? Oh with bells on! Sheesh my funniest, happiest and craziest school memories! West Humber - Rexdale, Toronto Lemmie see, I remember going into history class at West Humber Collegiate and a young man who was at that time to me very attractive in that he had great posture, I loved the colour of his hair, he was the perfect height, he had wide shoulders.. he was not a shrinking violet or was he just shy? (but remember I was a shy young lady, fashionable but shy) and I overheard his friend say to him "Give it up, she's way out of your league" or something to that effect. I never for one moment thought they were referring to me, or did I? Anyway too shy to do anything about it. Now thanks to this medium and an error on my part I realized the horrible truth. I'd missed by a hair... a precious opportunity for life with a man with whom it seems I had so much in common. Oh well.. such is life. That was not a funny, happy nor a crazy story. Let me think. I'll get back to ya. West Humber memories - Rexdale, Toronto Oh I remember going to a school dance and dancing with Greg Anderson. He said "don't be so stiff", whereupon I confessed that I had no idea how to dance, certainly not like he did. He showed me some moves and coached me along until I was moving like a disco queen with soul. He really was a good friend to me. He'd been to visit family in Detroit when the riots took place and returned with a hate on for white ppl. I was miffed. He wouldn't talk to me, acted angry and scared. I finally chided him over this and he blurted it all out. I was so angry and I let him know it. I straightened him out.. I was not part of that, never would be, harbor none of those feelings that the whites in Detroit did at that time. Finally on the last day of school as I was leaving the school grounds that year he rushed up calling my name and shyly asked if he could hold my hand. I gladly obliged, if only for a few fleeting moments and would do so again if I had the chance. He had such a heart. I have looked for him over the years. I think he said his father was in publishing or was a writer for a newspaper but am not sure. If anyone reading this knows his whereabouts or what happened to him I'd be so grateful to know. Somehow I keep thinking that the only ppl who will read this are from my school years in Toronto but I attended many other schools in other cities and towns and there is not enough room here to share any more of my memories. The book is being written har har. Please get in touch with me. Anyone. As I have said, with moves every other year I remember so many but with age I my memory needs a jog sometimes. So please feel comfy contacting the new kid.
