Cathleen's Story
Life
I have been living in Panama ( Central America) since late 1989 and am working as an English Literature Professor in both university and a private high school.
My children number 4; the first 3 were born in the Chicago area, where I lived after graduating from N. I. U. with Masters degrees in Literature, Secondary Education and an M.B.A. I should have specialised and finished my Doctorate, but I moved out of country before that could come to pass.
I have 3 girls; Maureen Diedre,22; Isabel Antonia, 20, who has downs Syndrome, and Celeste Teresa who just turned 16. My son, Alexis Ariel has just graduated from high school and is almost 18.
My husband owns his own business and works out of country for nearly 1/3rd of the year. We live on the outskirts of the city( a bit like a suburb, in an area which has 2 small lakes and still is country enough to have hawks, parrots, tucans, hummingbirds, tree sloths, iguanas, turtles and relatives of crocodiles (like cayman).
Although I quite miss the change of seasons (but not the car troubles in the win...Expand for more
ter!) I truely enjoy it here. My husband and his builder friends made a swimming pool which is my one true point of exercise. this project then turned into another small business.
Panama is the most modern of the Central American countries, and while I believe it lags behind 5 years in medical and other technologies, the gap is fast closing. When we came here 16 years ago, there was no cable and only one Money Express site in the city centre, the country is now full of cell phones, satelite dishes, internet, products of all types from electronics to cosmetics from both the states and Europe. Even the amount of and accessabily to reading materials has boomed. I'd say it is the best of both types of worlds.
I was last out of Panama in 2000 when we went to the states, visitng Miami and (ugh) Disney World and the Chicago area. Prior to that, in 1998 I went to St. Paul to visit my last living (American) cousin in St. Paul, MN and then went on to Ireland to vist my godmother and other family in Ireland.... after taking my oldest daughter on a month tour of Europe.
