Cathy's Story
School
I was rather quiet, a good student, and not real active in extracurricular activities. However, I was a member of the Speech Team my sophomore year in Readers' Theatre. I also was in the play "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" my sophomore year.
College
I attended Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville from 1979 to 1983, majoring in Clothing and Textiles Retailing. I lived in Ryle Hall for 3 years and lived off campus my last year.
I also attended Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau from 1988-1990 to get my elementary education teaching certificate. I lived off campus and worked part time at Casual Corner for awhile, then at Boatman's Bank as a teller.
Workplace
After college I went back home to Keokuk, IA to look for a job in my chosen field...clothing and textiles retailing. I worked at a grocery store for awhile, then moved to Columbia, MO for 2 years and worked at a couple of retail jobs in clothing and department stores. Moved to Kansas City in 1986 and worked as an assistant manager at Foxmoor, then worked for Caren Charles in downtown K.C. Got burned out on retail...long hours, bad pay, so decided to go back to school and get my teaching certificate at SE Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau for two years. for a teaching job, but never was able to break into it. Moved back to Kansas City and worked at Boatmen's Bank as a teller for 5 years. I wanted to do something else, but wasn't sure what, so did a short stint telemarketing for a company selling dental plans and worked for a mutual funds company for a short time. Didn't really like anything I was doing, so in 1995 I moved back to Canton, MO, where I grew up. An old friend who had her own medical transcription business hired me and trained me, and I have been doing that ever since. I finally found something I was good at and loved doing! I worked for her for 2 years and then moved back to K.C. for the third time! I worked for a medical transcription company called MedQuist for 5 1/2 years where I was able to work out of my home doing Radiology transcription for KU Medical Center. Then, in February of 2005, I starting working for a different transcription company called Spheris. I still work at home doing hospital and clinic reports for various hospitals.
My daughter, Allison, is now 17 and a Junior in high school. She is very active in choir and is a member of both the A Cappella choir and the show choir, Oak Street Singers. She has also been in the school musical for the last 2 years. She has a part time job as cashier/sacker at Sun Fresh grocery store and manages to keep all A's. Needless to say, I'm very proud of her!
