Cathy's Story

Life Living in Warren, PA, where husband is County School Superintendent after retiring from NYSEd and spending a year in SanDiego. We will celebrate our 38th anniversary Aug. 27th!! I'm not working any more but am quite active in the community. Am on two Boards : Woman's Club and Garden Club; belong to two Book Clubs and have several small groups of friends/neighbors/etc. who seem to like to celebrate birthdays, eat, and travel (day-trip)to interesting spots and just walk and talk! We have an older home that has become a hobby and I have learned a plethora of information about the Arts and Crafts movement of the turn of the last century. It's a good life. Our "kids" are in their 30's. Scott lives in Olean, NY and has a 15 year old son, Damian. Melanie and husband, Tony, live in Mebane, NC and have a 6yr.old son, AJ and a 3yr old daughter, Jaylen. My dad is still alive and well in B'ville. May 16th he celebrated his 90th b'day!!! The cruise with old friends from B'ville was quite the adventure in March and I am looking forward to seeing everyone in August. Workplace My work life has been interesting because I have done a variety of things never imagined but mostly revolving around education. Bachelor's degree in Elementary Ed. ....16 years of substitute teaching everything from nursery school to HS classes.....finally went back for a Master's degree in 1986. Family illnesses and "stuff" made the one year degree a six year quest! In '91 I received my Master's in reading education. Was also working part-time during thos...Expand for more
e years mostly through Federal grants at Cortland State teaching reading. When I got my degree I ended up teaching GED, English as a Second Language, Family Literacy and Study Skills. ESL was my favorite. Then I worked for Oswego County Head Start as their Disabilities Coordinator. When we moved to Olean, NY in '95 I no longer was looking for work but a job managed to find me anyway! Another grant, this time through the State and the local library, I was hired to set up a "Prescriptive reading program" which required me to learn the heirarchy in the medical community in order to convince the doctors to participate. I also went into prepared chidbirth classes and did a little schtick on the importance of reading to your children. That was kind of fun because I got to give out freebies!!! In 2001 when John left NYS Education for a position at San Diego State University I officially gave up all part time work and focused on learning my new surroundings. It was a great year. In Warren a year later my focus was to become a part of the community as fast and best as I could. We've moved a lot over the years and I no longer like being the new kid on the block! And my learning now comes from having bought a house built in 1914-1915 and involves reading about the Craftmens" period from late 1800s to about the 1920s. Part of the charm of this house was that it already had a history. Two book clubs (one here in Warren and one back in Olean where old friends won't let me quit) also help to keep the cobwebs from getting too thick in my brain!
