Charles (BILL)'s Story

NEW: Aug. 9, 2018 Howdy fellow Highlanders, Those of you who have read my posted ‘stories’, may recall that I was heavily involved as a volunteer docent at the museum home of the famous Cowboy movie star, Wm. S. Hart. Mr. Hart made silent movies when our dads were boys and young men. Hart’s will donated his mansion home and property to the County of Los Angeles as a perpetual free museum. In 2009, a well known ‘video logger’ visited us to make a film for PBS television. Mr. Huell Howser (now deceased) traveled up-and-down California showing us the historic, odd, and beautiful sites in our State, for over 10 years. I was pleased to give him a tour of the mansion. PBS stations air it several times each year and sell DVD copies to the general public. Now it has been released for (free) streaming! This venue doesn't allow me to give you the web site. Try a search for Wm. S. Hart Park and Museum, and California's Golden Parks (153). It runs for 1 hour; my portion is in the second half. Mr. Howser was quite a nice guy. All in California miss him and his shows. [Picture framing may appear narrowed] Bill Crowl Life: UPDATE It appears that my last update was 2012. So, what’s been happening in the last 5 years? In January, 2014, my beloved wife for 55 years, passed away from COPD. We were both smokers from our teens till our 50’s. [Do any of you remember how we sneaked a smoke in the boy’s bathroom at Peabody? Then, Vice-principal, Mr. Brackman, would pounce through the door and just point! Automatic detention – no protests, we were guilty and lost the ‘game’. I attended our local community college for 3-semesters; I enrolled in subjects that had always interested me, but for which I never had time to pursue; Art History, Geology, Law, Cinema, Calif. History, Hotel Management, and Excel. Got a 3.85 GPA! I continued with my volunteer work at the Hart Museum and in Scouting, until this recent May, 2017. Then I sold the house – it was hard for this 84-year old widower to maintain the home in a respectable manner. I left the green, cosmopolitan Valley to move into our daughter’s large home in Barstow, CA. in the Great Mojave Desert. Barstow is located at the junction of I-40 and I-15, about midway between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, Nevada. Main Street is part of the old “Route 66”, of history, literature, music, and TV. I contemplate catching a Las Vegas bound Tour Bus here, getting off at McCarran Airport, hopping a plane to Oklahoma City, and having Bar-b-que dinner at our Son’s ranch. I live comfortably and work-out at the gym 5-days/week and am making connections to continue my Volunteer works. I’ve dedicated most of my home sales equity profit to our children/grandchildren’s advanced educations. THIS IS THE ORIGINAL STORY After graduation from Peabody High in Jan. 1950, I entered Bucknell University in September. I majored in Chemical Engineering since I had always been a mad scientist. However, my mother's health necessitated that we move West, so I left in my Sophomore year. In Southern California, I attended a Junior College to obtain ...Expand for more
some State requirements, boost my Grade Point Average and grow up. I then obtained my BS in Chemical Engineering at the University of Southern California in 1956. I designed airflow intake and exhaust systems for military jet aircraft for 5 years and married my trophy wife, Elizabeth, in 1959. In the Summer of 1961, Eliz , I and our baby daughter moved to a suburb of Seattle, WA. I worked on jet aircraft corrosion prevention for Boeing for the next 3 years, during which our son was born. Then I was hit in an Industry Layoff. So in 1964, I started all over again in a new career -- technical sales of industrial lubricants for Texaco in the Pacific Northwest. This work exposed me to a great variety of industries where I learned to trouble shoot their problems. In 1970, Texaco moved us back to southern California as their Sales Engineer in metropolitan Los Angeles. In 1976, they transferred me to San Bernardino, CA, where I had responsibilities for a vast area which included western Arizona and Las Vegas, NV. We moved to a small mountain ski resort town between Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear, CA. It had good air and very little of the inner city problems for our kids. Our son became an expert skier and joined the Army in 1981. Our daughter married in late 1981 and moved to West Berlin, Germany, with her Military husband. Soon after, the dog died and I began taking Eliz on most of my business trips, particularly the ones to Las Vegas. Then, in 1987, I was promoted to Chief Lubrication Engineer for Texaco's 10 western states. My office at the West Coast Executive Headquarters was in Universal City, CA, next door to the Universal City Theme Park. They moved us to a home in Valencia, CA (now a part of the City of Santa Clarita, CA), a half-hour drive, north of the office. The well known 6-Flags Magic Mountain Theme Park is just across the Freeway. I traveled extensively. In 1994, Texaco offered me an early retirement program. The newly found freedom allowed Eliz and I to drive back East for a visit to my Aunt in Bakerstown (PHS 1941 or 1942). Of course, we drove to the old neighborhoods around Peabody. Lots of changes in 43 years! I hardly recognized Peabody in its brick shell. I was impressed with the well dressed students at old Dilworth. I almost got a traffic ticket, trying to find Penn Ave.& Highland. I visited my old neighbor, Ted Soens (PHS `49) on the hill overlooking Morningside. He drove us Downtown to see all the clean buildings. Now I'm into volunteer work. For 8 years, I was a Director/CEO of the "Friends of Wm. S. Hart County Park and Museum", which is the financial support group for the former estate of the famous cowboy star of silent movies. I also conduct free tours of the mansion/museum for the school kids and other Park visitors. I've been the District Commissioner of our Boy Scouting program for 9 years. I was awarded the Silver Beaver in 2012. Our daughter and her husband are highschool English teachers in California. Our son retired from the Army (Special Forces) and is a Physician's Assistant who runs a hospital Emergency Room in Oklahoma. Between our two kid's families, we have 6 Grandchildren. Eliz is my soul-mate and a recognized Artist. She keeps me looking and thinking young, while I write about local Western History and try to keep in decent physical shape.
