Charles's Story

During high school I was actively involved with the Latin American Club, a non school group whose only requirement was that you attend SFA. We met weekly at the Denver Harbor gym and hosted fund raisers so that our graduation prom could be held. This group also served to bring students of Mexican descent together for some fellow ship and support. So I naturally became involved with the Chicano movement in Houston. This included increased participation with the political activity in the Hispanic community. I was involved in voter registration drives, political campaigns and many discussions. After graduation in 1968 I pursued my academic career by attending the University of St. Thomas in Houston. But in 1970 I set out on another of my life goals by becoming a Peace Corps Volunteer. My group, Los Paperos 1 met at Texas A & M University in College Station where we trained as agricultural volunteers for work in Perú.. Once I was in country everyday was an adventure and the experience can only be described as a camp out that was "fascinating". One of the biggest adjustments was leaving my site in Acobama, Huancavelica and being reassigned to Huaraz, Ancash, the site of the 1970 earthquake. My duties expanded and I traveled throughout the Callejon de Huaylas which is a valley in the Andes mountains. I returned to UST in 1972 and began my studies again. In 1973 I accepted a summer volunteer assignment with the Winant and Clayton volunteers in London, England where I served as an adventure playground worker at the TOC H Centre in Croydon and at the Hanwell Crescent Centre in London's West End. I was able to get away on week ends and visit Paris, Liverpool, Cambridge and Brighton Beach plus numerous other sites. Once again I returned to St. Thomas and received direction and support from many including Rev. John ...Expand for more
Minter, Dr. Bermudez, Hon. Tom Bass and Fr. Rivers Patout. With their encouragement and support I completed my studies at UST in 1975. Upon graduation I accepted a job with Bob Bullocks office, the Comptroller of Public Accounts, in Austin, Texas and remained there for about 1 year. I returned to Houston at the end of 1976 and began working with the Wesley Community Center as the Coordinator for the Youth Program. I made a 3-5 year commitment but 23 years later I finally moved on. The activities there were varied and included numerous camping trips, coaching sports teams, establishing a Scouting program and providing social services to youth in Houston's inner city. During this period I married Maria Concepcion Guerra in Cuidad Juarez in 1987. Our union was increased with the addition of 4 children (Omar, '89; Caroline, '91; Samuel, '91 and Andrew, '95.). Although I graduated from UST in 1975 I returned to school and earned my MSW at the University of Houston in 1995. We relocated to El Paso in 1999 and I became employed as the Resident Manager of the McKee Residence a program of the YMCA of Greater El Paso. I remained there till 2005. I then served as a "sub" with El Paso EPISD for a short period until I became employed with El Paso's MHMR agency, now renamed Emergence Health Network. My duties include serving individuals with mental retardation (now identified as IDD, Intellectual Developmental Disabilities). I also worked on the agency's Crisis Line staff on the week ends and as needed. I remained with crisis for 6 years and still remain with IDD unit. I am thankful for the exciting life that I have lived and look forward to more adventures, challenges and unforgettable experiences. Thanks to all the friends and mentors who gave me their time, provided me with guidance, and assisted me in moving on.
