Charles "Doug"las's Story
I am originally from Jacksonville
Florida.Went to Catholic School
1-5.Moved to Montgomery on April 5,1963.I was called Charles, but when I got here, I changed to my middle name Doug / Douglas Booth,Jr.Lived off Mt Meigs Rd on Heustess St.My parents failed to place me in public school(CHES) until the fall of 63.I started school late in Jax. bc my birthday was in December and I failed the 3rd grade.I was in the 5th grade when we moved here and they couldn't find my records, so I had to repeat the 5th grade all over again. The school I was attending in Jax was far more advanced in teaching than here, so I had no problems in the 5th or 6th grade, which Classmates have my time frame wrong in here.I was in the 5th in 63-64 (Mrs Lazenby) & the 6th in 64-65 (Started with Mrs Brooks, but a week later they moved me to Mrs Zachary).Went to CHJH for the 7th in 65-66 & in the 8th in 66-67.I was doing well in school, but I turned 16 on Dec 5th of the 8th grade. This is bc of reasons stated above, so I was bored with the whole idea of school, and even thinking I would be 21 years old when graduating from Lee High School.I quit CHJH in Feb of 67 and started painting houses for a while. My brother worked for the City of Montgomery in the Traffic Engineering Department and got me a job as a utility worker.I started Jan 3,1968 and had just turned 17 years old.Got married in July of 69 to Debbie Judy.We had been seeing each other on and off for three years prior. Our first daughter was born in 70 and second in 74.I continued to work for the city learning everything I could.
In 74 got my first promotion to Sign Shop Forman. The pay was still not where it needed to be with a wife and two daughters so I continued to paint houses,worke...Expand for more
d at Delchamps Grocery Store,Avis Rent A Car.
In 75.I was promoted again to Assistant Supervisor of the Sign and Sign & Striping Division.Later that same year one of the engineers in the office asked me if I would like to come to the office a few days a week and learn about traffic signals and other engineering principles.
I did that until 76 and they decided to keep me in the office. Since I didn't have a high school diploma,I went to AUM and took the GED and passed it.The city then sent me to The Traffic Institute in Chicago at Northwestern University.I also went to Georgia Tech for training in 77.I finally got a promotion to Traffic Engineer l in 78 and to a TE 2 in 79.Couldn't go any further, bc I didn't have time to persue a college degree, so I would train the graduates fresh out of college the common sense and PR skills needed to do the job.Book sense is good, but it takes the other factors to do the job effectively. After 40 years of service, I had to retire bc of back problems.Lost my wife of 40 years two weeks after our 40th anniversary due to cancer.Have two daughters, then thirteen years later, God blessed us with a son,Charles Douglas Booth, lll.
I still reside in Montgomery, in the last section of Forest Hills that was built in 1992.It is between Willow Lane Dr and Brewton St where it used to dead end at Mimosa St
Used to ride my bike in the woods here in 1963.
Have 8 grand-daughters, oldest being 29 & youngest turned 6 in May 2016.Have 3 grandsons,1st being 22,2nd is in heaven,died at 7 months prior to being born,and 3rd was just born May 12,2016.
Love and living for God.Still like rock and roll music the 50's through the 70's.Still love camping and Alabama Football --Roll Tide !!🐘🐘🐘🐘
