Charles David's Story
I've spent most of my life in the New York City area annd northern New Jersey, after finishing undergraduate school in New England and graduate school in Princeton. I loved New York and tried to take full advantage of the music, art and wonderful energy that pervade the city. I moved to southern Florida, to West Palm Beach, about two years ago. I spent the first 30-years of my career teaching Applied Economics to graduate students at several national universities in the New York area, at times also serving as a Dean, Executive Director and Provost. My focus has been Risk Management, with an emphasis on international business. I also got involved with fundraising and development and played a key role in building the Greenberg School of Risk Management, Insurance and Actuarial Science at St. John’s University.
At the end of my academic career I began to get interested in entrepreneurial ventures and I created and built a number of technology, education and services companies prior to getting very involved in the Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning about 8-years ago. I started my professional life as an economics and risk management professor and administrator at Seton Hall, St. Johns, Stevens Institute of Technology and The College of New Jersey. I've thoroughly enjoyed all of my career experiences.
I have four great kids...my oldest daughter Maggie graduated from Northwestern University and completed her MBA at NYU before joining Amazon in Seattle. She’s now running the online marketing functions for a regional competitor of Amazon’s. She also the mother of my youngest grandchild, a grandson named Fozzie. Mags and her family relocated to Tampa about two years ago, about the same time I moved to West Palm Beach. My eventual goal is to have all four of my kids and their families down here in Florida, subject to their varied career commitments.
My oldest son Charles Rhoads Edinger and his family, including my granddaughter Jaela and grandson Lincoln Rhoads Edinger live 20-minutes away from me in Palm Beach Gardens, which is wonderful. CJ drives big trucks for a living. I am amazed that he does many of his deliveries into urban areas, where most people have trouble parking a car. Our plan is for Charles Rhoads to set-up his own trucking company after he has acquired enough experience with day-to-day business management. CJ and I share common interests in sports and motorcycles.
CJ's brother George Richard Penn Edinger is a screen-writer and producer with NBC in Hollywood. He was working on the new Night Court until he took some time off to travel and work in Eur...Expand for more
ope. George was the top graduate in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse, he is a fencer, a musician (piano, trombone, and baritone) and shares my enjoyment of Tolkien, Harry Potter and similar literature. George has also had roles in several plays at school, including Noises Off, You Can't Take It With You, and The Pajama Game. George is working to become a comedy screenwriter and already has some excellent scripts.
My daughter Abigail Lynne Edinger is an attorney who is currently working on a horse farm outside Sydney, Australia. Abby had her own radio show and managed three bands that toured throughout the southeast during her college career at Elon University.
My interests are varied, but my appreciation of jazz and rock music has only gotten more serious since I've been located in New York. During recent years I've managed to see David Sanborn, Chick Corea, Gato Barbieri, Al Jarreau, Bela Fleck, The Crusaders, Return-to-Forever, Spyro Gyra, Steely Dan, Eric Clapton, Stevie Winwood, Larry Carlton and several other acts live, with most of the jazz artists appearing at The Blue Note in the Village or uptown at the Beacon. I follow the Yankees, but still look for the Phillies box scores.
I am still a working economist and I stay involved with the American Economics Association, the National Association for Business Economics and various groups where applied economists tend to hang out. My field is the understanding and management of risk, especially its international dimensions, which I continue to find both fascinating and lucrative. I am libertarian in my perspective, as my family has always been, and I've gotten increasingly involved in supporting the Ayn Rand Institute, Cato Institute and Manhattan Institute in the last decade or so. I'm also a fellow of the Promethium, which is a philosophical society modeled on the Junto, which was founded by Ben Franklin and my ancestor Samuel Rhoads, which is based in Stamford, Connecticut. I'm a member of the Union League Club of New York, which is cool since my Dad's family helped found the Union League Club of Philly during the American Civil War. I was also a member of the Downtown Athletic Club until it folded after 9/11.
I haven't been great at keeping current with my relationships over the years, but that has changed with the advent of Facebook and LinkIn, both of which I follow fairly regularly. I am still close with my old pals Steve Milton and Eddie King and my brother Paul Jeffrey (AKA Big Bird) Edinger. I'd love to hear from old friends and to see anyone passing through southern Florida.
