Charles's Story

I joined the Army Reserve fresh out of high school but was discharged from training. I played around Pensacola in a bar band called Gigolo from 1984-1987. I moved to Los Angeles in '87 to pursue a musical career. After attending Musicans Institute in Hollywood (graduated in '90) I was hired at a local, independent record store where I worked until November 2001. I started as a clerk but eventually became district manager. In 1995 I met the woman I would marry in 1998; things didn't work out and our divorce became final in April, 2001. I met my current girlfriend right after 9/11/01 and shortly thereafter (11/01) that record store laid me off due to poor financial management. It didn't help as they're out of business now. I worked from late 2001 to very early 2005 for Pacific Theatres as an operations manager. A short stint as an AutoZone manager followed, but it was not for me. I got out of the zone in December 2005 and from January to August 2006 worked as the supervisor of media operations for E! Networks (E! Entertainment Television and The Style Network). E! laid me off and I looked for work for some time. I was hired by Guitar Center in March 2007. Not long after, I had an epiphany that I HATED being in management and always had! I decided that what I really wanted to do was be an editor, movie style. I started training at Video Symphony in Burbank in September, 2008. I was certified in Avid Media Composer and Final Cut Pro 7 in early 2010, when I also finished the editing program.. I write a lot: poetry, songs, short stories, ...Expand for more
screenplays (five and counting) and an incomplete novel. Before you go looking for my stuff anywhere, let me tell you I've never been published. I still play bass guitar and was in the band Final Gravity from late 2007 until summer 2011. We recorded and released an album and an EP. Contact me on Facebook if you want to reconnect: Cla$$mate$ kinda sucks, huh? School Those who knew me even a little should not be surprised to hear that I hated high school. I was bored with the classes by 10th grade and spoke to both a guidance counselor and my mom about getting a GED and starting at PJC at age 16. They both talked me out of it, and I think it is the only real regret in my life that I let them. I was so bored and disengaged through my junior and senior years that I almost flunked out. By the time I graduated, I hated school so much that I vowed never to go to college. I did move to California to pursue my dream of a music career, and part of that did involve school. I attended Musicians Institute and graduated in 1990. I have taken one college class since; an algebra class in the late 90's. So I'm carrying a 4.0 average right now! I might get an online degree someday, but it's not my main priority right now. Military Basic training for the Army Reserves didn't work out. "Incompatibility with Army lifestyle" was the official reason. Really, I'm just not cut out to take orders that I don't voluntarily seek out. And that whole killing people thing is against my personal beliefs, which became very clear to me as I was training to do just that.
