Charles's Story

Life I was Born in Okla. City, Oklahoma on June 4th, 1935. After living with my mother in Oklahoma, California, Texas, and Nebraska my Grandmother said please let Skeeter, (That's the nickname My grandmother hung on me), come live with me. Thats where I stayed and grew up at 3309 S. Hudson in Capitol Hill. Attended Lee Elementary School from the 3rd grade on up, 1943 to 1947. Attended Capitol Hill Jr High from 1947 to 1950. Attended Capitol Hill High School from 1950 to 1953 and graduated from Capitol Hill High School in 1953. Went to live in Omaha Nebraska and worked for the J.P. Cooke Co. Worked there for about eighteen months and saved my money to go to college. I made dog tags, medals, signs and plaques of all sizes. Went to OU in 1955, 1956 and until May of 1957. Joined the Army in Sep. of 1957. Went to drafting school in Fort Belvore Virginia after basic training at Fort Carson Colorado. I was stationed in Fairbanks Alaska for eighteen months in the 18th Engineer Corp attached to Ladd Airforce Base. I will never forget New Years Eve 1958 because the temperature was a minus 66 degrees below zero and the snow was about three feet deep and still coming down. I was a Consruction Draftsman there and worked with the surveying crews. I made topographical maps of the "Dew Line" (Defensive Earily Warning System) that was to protect us from the Russian's if they ever came over the North Pole. I served until Sep. 1960. I achieved the rank of E-5 or Buck Sergeant. Went to work for Western Electric in Lee's Summit, Mo. in Oct. of 1960 in the Machine Design Department as a Draftsman, later promoted to a Engineering Associate. I designed various types of assmebly machines that made product for the Telephone Companies and retired from AT&T in Aug. of 1995 (which later became Lucent Technologies) I Have three children from my first marriage, Cindy D. Overstreet (6/07/62), Michael L. Overstreet (12/18...Expand for more
/65) and Matthew C. Overstreet (09/13/70). I have two Grandchildren Isabel Raye Overstreet (2/26/01) and Trysten Jordan Overstreet (7/10/02). I Married Betty Lou (Allender) Helliker in Aug. of 1975 and have been Married now for 30 years. Betty Lou Allender was born in Dover, Mo. in 1930 and grew up in the town of Mayview, Mo.(pop.about 350) which is about 20 miles east of Blue Springs where we live now. She went to Mayview High School from 1940 to 1948 where she graduated in 1948.(There were only 8 classmates in her graduating class) compared to ( CHHS Class of "53" was 535 strong) Betty Lou worked for Travelers Insurance Co. in downtown Kansas City before going to work for AT&T in Lee's Summit, Mo in 1962. Betty Lou worked for AT&T as a Executive Secretary for 28 years, and retired in May of 1990. Betty Lou has one son from her first marriage Timothy M. Helliker (8/01/58) We own our home here in Blue Springs, Mo. and have lived at our present address for 5 years. We have lived in the Blue Springs, Mo. area now for 30 years. Betty Lou and I love to travel in the good old USA and our favorite spot is Ruidoso, NM in the mountains which is about 70 miles west of Roswell and about 160 miles south of Albuquerque NM. She loves the mountains and I love to walk in the woods. We try and spend at least two or three weeks there in July because that is their rainy season. The temperatures their in July range from about 40 degrees at night to 85 in the daytime. We love to spoil our two dogs Molly a Bichon Frise and Sugar our Cairn Terrier. I try and walk them every day weather permitting. Our dog Molly died on Christmas day of 2007. We got a new dog Feb. 10, 2008, a Maltese and her name is Lucy. She is a joy to have and my wife finally got a true lap dog. Lucy and Sugar get along very well, we were afraid that Sugar because she is nine years old might resent Lucy but not so they are great together.
