Richard's Story

Why am I in Classmates.com? Why am I in Classmates.com? Good question without a clear answer. I was born and reared in Newark, Ohio, spending my first 18 years there. After I retired my wife and I traveled. We traveled across the USA to parks, cities and landmarks that we could only dream about when I was working. I had a deep-seated feeling something was missing. I needed to try to understand why I made the choices I made in life, some good - many not so good. I needed to return to Newark, a city I loved with many good memories. The city I grew to know from the inside out. "That is My Town!" At an early age I lost a parent. With one parent deceased, one sickly and a step-parent, the less I write about the step-parent the better, life got tough quick. We, as a family, went from upper middle class to welfare in a "Newark Minute." Newark has minutes just like New York, you know. I was allowed to roam the streets of Newark day and night. This is not a good situation for a youngster! I left my church, First Methodist, at age thirteen and never looked back. Why? I don't know! One reason was because I felt uncomfortable in church. Maybe that is the way one feels in church. I don't know! I ran with many kids who went home at night to far worse than me, after all we are talking about Newark, OH, not Bayberry, NC. Other than the occasional trouble that I got into, I crashed a car at age 13. I bought a car at age 15 driving this car for 2 years without a license, brakes or insurance. That is enough writing about the trouble that came my way. My grandfather got a hold of me in my senior year and in one week I was a licensed driver with a more reliable car with insurance. I cannot remember anyone asking me if I wanted these changes. Growing up in Newark I worked a paper route, caddied, picked strawberries, was a theater usher, worked Big Bear Stores produce and set bowling pins. Not a bad work resume before I became eighteen, huh? As you might have guessed, money was tight at home. I attended school in this order Fulton Elementary, Wilson Junior High, Polytechnic High School, Long Beach, Ca, and Newark Senior High School. I never took a book home during my junior high or high school years. I was busy in study halls. Busy! Busy! I was marching to a different drummer in those days. I am still marching to a looney tune! While my ...Expand for more
classmates were worrying about how they were going to get to the next away ball game, how to dress for the next day in school, who their next date was going to be for the dance or how their grades were, I was in a whole different world and running with a different crowd. I was missing a lot of school which is strange because I liked school and later in life spent some of my best hours in classrooms. I graduated because I was given the occasional token automatic promotion sometimes passed out. Strings were pulled! Six months after graduation from high school, I left Newark. I am searching for a way to say this. I had a few legal mishaps to settle before I could leave town. It took me a dozen years to settle down. Between jobs I hitched across the country, several times, joined the military, attended college and flirted with the beatnik movement, remember them - coffee houses with bad music and poetry. During this period of my life I never worried about anything as money was never a problem. I just did not care! I felt like I was observing life, not living it! In the late 1960's, I found work in Newark, of all places. I hired on the B&O Railroad, 24-7 work, strong back-weak mind work! Work tailored to keep me out of trouble and help melt away some bad habits I had acquired. I was saved! That's "BS" I only changed lifestyles. I recently had the chance to peruse my high school yearbook and other than the kids I went to Fulton Elementary School with. The high school year book was a book full of strangers. So why am I in "Classmates. Com?" Not to renew old acquaintances or whatever. I am in "Classmates.com" for the same reasons I visit Newark occasionally to find answers for haunting questions circling in my little mind about how and why my life unfolded. Have I found these answers? Some questions answered, but not all! If you have plowed through this dribble and reached this point congratulations for I am not a practiced writer. Hopefully you now know that not all bios need to be grammatically correct or all warm and fuzzy. Time for you to write your bio or NOT! Afterthought: Is the above story, as my wife calls it, a "Poor Me" story. If she is right then I missed my point in writing this story. The above story was an attempt to write the truth. I have not lived a "Poor Me " life and I enjoyed growing up in Newark, Ohio. As Always Chasing a Healthy Heart, .................... RCP
