Charles's Story

The senior year at River Oaks Academy in 1966-1967 was an interesting time - to say the least. As I remember most, if not all, of the students previously came from the Belle Chasse High School. Construction of the school didn’t finish until September of ’66. Students did not get to start until about the end of September. As a result, we went to school on Saturdays to help make up for the time lost in September. I remember this schedule went on until April of 1967. In addition, there was the question of River Oaks being accredited. The accreditation came through in the spring of 1967 and the Senior Class of ’67 was able to graduate. I was certainly happy to be a part of that class. My senior year was an eventful one for me. My family moved into a new home in Lake Park on Avenue A. We were still working on it that September. Some of my neighbors included the families of Johnny Pierrel, Les Jordan and Jerry Kahr. Highlights I remember from our senior year include: 1. Being honored by the senior class by being elected senior class president. 2. Being honored by the faculty by being nominated and winning the American Legion award. 3. Working on the school annual with Ms. McLeod, Earl Windom, Johnny Pierrel, Joe Smith, Steve Blount, Nancy Duver, Les Jordan, Gerald Crawford, Claudia Simmons, and Naomi Kraemer. These guys were great. I’m probably forgetting someone. If so, I apologize. 4. Riding in Johnny Pierrel’s car on the way to school one day, passing Mrs. Adkins-who decided to pass at the same time. We flew off the road to the shoulder where Johnny got us stopped. Mrs. Adkins almost took us out. I always remember her as a nice lady-we kept our eye on her after that though. 5. Sitting in the back seat of Les Jordan’s Chevy SS, coming home from school on the Belle Chasse highway, Les passing a school bus, running out of time and road to oncoming traffic, taking his car through the First Baptist Church parking lot and stopping in someon...Expand for more
e’s front yard. I think I spent the rest of the day trying to swallow my heart. 6. Sitting in Miss Lepine’s French II class and listening to the Singing Nun (who was singing in Belgium, not French) – but who cared. 7. Going to the French Quarter on weekends with Les, Amanda, Johnny and Earl and drinking more than I should. 8. At a get together with Larry Windham and others, someone getting the bright idea of everyone dying their hair blonde. We should have checked with the girls. Mine came out orange – just in time for senior pictures! In a panic I got my dad to take me to our barbershop to get my hair dyed back to brown. The barbers had a great laugh-but I did get rid of the orange hair. 9. Working with the seniors to raise money for our unofficial senior trip to Biloxi. Going against Principle Cousins wishes for the trip. My folks coming through as chaperones. Drinking too much again. Kirk Aycock and I rearranging letters on a sign next to the motel cottages we were staying in to spell “not so nice words”. Partying on the beach. By the way the photos I posted to the classmates site came from some old black and white Polaroids. I don’t know how I wound up with them. After graduation, I went to LSU in Baton Rouge. During the summers I worked in the pot rooms at Kaiser Aluminum (toughest job I ever had), construction and offshore with Shell Oil Co. I graduated in 12/71 with a B.S. in Marketing. I met my lovely wife, Betty, at LSU and married June 3, 1972. We celebrated our 47th anniversary this year. I worked predominately in operations and sales for NOV Tuboscope, NDT, Weatherford and Baker Hughes. I retired at the end of 2017 after working 45 years. We’ve got two great sons - Stephen and John. I enjoyed the previous class reunions and especially the 50th last year in Slidell. I enjoyed seeing everyone and regret not being able to spend more time with everyone. Hope folks in my class of ’67 are doing well. Charles Raleigh
