At Hoover High School, I was in the band, orchestra and pep band, playing trumpet for the first two years. Have fond memories of band trips, including an evening at the Long Beach Pike. In R.O.T.C all three years. Being the bugler one year cured me of further music participation, as I was the first person up in the morning and last to bed at night. Member of the rifle team. Foreign languages were the bane of my existence. Attended The Citadel in Charleston, S.C., 1960 - 1964. Was on the rifle team all four years. Commissioned a second lieutenant in the US Army Military Intelligence. Married six days after graduation. Served on active duty from 1964 - 1972. First assignment to Fort Hood, Texas.
