Charles's Story
Recenty, I've been going to British Columbia for Moose and Elk. Staying in the wilderness for 10 days, riding on horseback, no electricity or running water and climbing around in the Northern Rockies and Stone Mountains in search of big game just south of the Artic Circle is life long dream of mine.
In September '07, I took my middle son (16 at the time) with me. He killed an Elk and a real nice Moose, I killed an Elk but had to search for it for days in order to find it. While looking for it, the guide and I were charged by a grizzly that had found my Elk first! When we decided this wasn't a bluff, we both fired together and stopped the bear in his tracks... just seven feet from the guide and twelve feet from me.
The bear continued to growl and roar while spinning on his side, so I shot at his chest once more. That sto...Expand for more
pped him for a few seconds, but then he jumped up and ran off.
We followed his back trail to where he was when he started his charge (70 yards away) and there was my Elk, completely buried except for one antler tine.
We could hear the bear circling us as the guide dug the head and antlers out of the mound of dirt to sever the head. We then walked down the mountain, back to back with the rotten Elk head between us. When we hit the river at the foot of the mountain (about a mile downhill), we crossed right there, through the 39 degree glacial melt water.
This year, I bought 2 time shares at Lake Tahoe and my brother Will, my fiance' Lisa and I plan to spend a week out there skiing. Will took us out a few years ago and we fell in love with the place. Reno, Carson City, Virginia City... another life long dream come true.
