Charles Stephen's Story
10 years at Duke after CHS and 2 years at NIH, Internal Medicine, before jumping ship into Ophthalmology at Wash U in St. Louis and then into Ocular Immunology at Harvard. I've been in Boston and at Harvard since 1975, full time Professor but jumped into the private sector in 2005, still Harvard Professor but creating a private Institution, the Massachusetts Eye Research and Surgery Institution (MERSI)(mersi.com) for the study of Ocular Inflammatory Diseases, causes, cures and training others in the discipline. My wife, Frances, a Nurse Practitioner, partners with me in this, co-owner of the business, Vice President, and critical to the success of it. Aside from our grandchildren and my son, Marc and the vacations we do together (including each year at West Virginia's beloved Greenbrier), MERSI is our life; we love it and we live it.
Both my parents have passed on. Mother lived with us in Boston for the last 4 years of her life. So I have no one left...Expand for more
in Charleston and have not returned there for the past 7 years. I will return briefly to deliver a talk in August, and am very much looking forward to seeing the changes that have occured and remnissing about water skiing on the Kanawha and going to Watt Powell Park and to Coonskin Park and shooting pool at the Strand and hanging on the corner at the Valley Bell on Washington St and sneaking into the Capitol on Sundays to explor every nook and cranny of the place, including the dome light house and hopping freight trains to explore other "strange" places such as Chelyan and Dunbar and spending countless hours with Julia Walker over our 3 year "going steady" until my heart was broken when she and her parents moved to Houston, and Friday night football and Saturday track meets, and Miriam West (Chemistry) and Bob Sloan (Physics)and on and on. My God, my years in Charleston were wonderful!CHS was such a good school and the student body was terrific too.
