Charles (Gene)'s Story
I was unsure of my calling in life so I started at Marshall University in the fall of 1965 after our graduation from High School. After that year I moved to Appalachian Bible College because I felt the need to learn more about the Bible and to strengthen my Christian faith. While there I met my future wife and became engaged to Miss Laurel Laborde from Luthersburg, Pa.. We married in the summer of 1969.
While there I felt lead to prepare for teaching in Christian day schools so I moved on to Bryan College in the fall of 1969. I majored in biology education and completed my degree in the spring of 1972. My oldest son Ben was born in Dayton, Tenn. just before we moved.
I taught school that fall in the Tidewater area of Virginia teaching primarily Biology and Bible but also some math. The following year I found myself in a small community in central Ohio (Dover-New Philadelphia ) at Indian Hills Christian School for several years. Christian book store in Huntington, WV, another short stint teaching, and then as a pipe-fitter in the coal industry of WV.
Sensing Gods leading me back into education in the Christian ministry of the Christian High School, I took a position at Westover Christian Academy in Danville, Va. It was my privilege to serve there for 11 years before moving here to Charleston, SC at James Island Christian School for a 3 year period.
Since then for the past 11 years I have been doing maintenance work for a realty company here in Charleston and trying to be faithful to my local church wherever I can be of service.
There are 2 mottos that express the mission of the 2 primary colleges I attended that I am trying to live by:
They are from Appalachian Bible College " Because Life is for Service" and from Bryan College: "Christ Above All."
These are ideals that are worthy of all the effort one can exert and I hope to be faithful to them to the end of my time here on this earth. What we do in life echoes in eternity ---from the Gladiator
